I had some family visit from out of town so we decided to check out the museum. There was lots of cool information about the history of St.Catharines as well as some historical artifacts on display. At the time there was an exhibition highlighting how the spanish flu influenced residents in the area. It was a great idea to show how this massive global phenomenom affected people at the local level. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Only thing is that the video that we watched was a bit cheesy and dated, but can't complain since it's a free museum. Overall it's a nice place to visit if you're interested in local history.

The viewing platform is a great way to see down onto a ship from close proximity. The platform can get busy - in which case good visibility would be hard for children.
The platform has stairs but is also accessible for those with limited mobility using the elevator in the building.

The St. Catharines museum opened its doors to the public to get a glimpse of St. Catharines past. We were taken downstairs where so much memorabilia is stored in temperature controlled rooms. Very little was available to touch but that is completely understandable. The tour guides were pleasant and informative. I highly suggest a visit.

Many things to learn about the seaway, how it works and its economic history. The Museum offers some interesting historical bits on the history of the region and the Canal. I did not know the geography of the land and that there was such a difference between Lake Ontario and the other great lakes, although we can see the drop at Niagara.

We visited the museum on June 28. There is parking next to the museum, no entrance fee just a donation. The exhibits are about Lacrosse, St Catharines and the construction of the canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
If you are lucky, you will see a ship entering the lock.
Next to the museum is a monument to the workers who lost their lives building the canal.

After having a wonderful lunch at George’s Greek Village, my cousin and I visited this museum. No entry fee but donations accepted. There were different rooms with their unique exhibits. They were exquisite and very informative and quite elaborate, The Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and museum part of it is a must see. The outdoor catwalk with the view on the canal is an added bonus. Had to get magnet and hat as a souvenir from the shop. My cousin refrained from touching artifacts this time 🙂

Somewhat interesting museum centered around the construction of the Welland Canal from lake Ontario to Lake Eire. A lot of items concerning lacrosse and Native Americans. Adjacent to Lock #3, where 10 or so huge ships pass through every 24 hours. Marvelous sight if you can catch one

Interesting museum about the building of the Welland Canal. Try and time your visit to when a ship is actually going through the lock - that is quite a site. On the same premises there is also a museum about the history of St. Catharines, and another museum about the history of Lacrosse.

This was a happy surprise! We were in the area for another reason and met a couple who explained the locks and directed us to the museum. We were fortunate that there was a ship in the lock when we arrived.. We briefly went into the museum, and we were able to watch the shop leave. It's just very unique experience that we didn't plan on doing!

here's how alot of others I have known tour the Canal.
start at lock 1 - closest to lake ontario. From there you can drive up the Canal Road all the way up to Thorold o
Ontario - making stops along the way.
the museum is a good stop. lots to see -
it's quite an experience to see the steel cargo ships manouvering.
station 93.3 tells you which lock or bridge is up -
plan for the Day!!!!! it's a journey. there is also an amazing Bike walking pathway along side the Canal as well.
hope this helps.

I'd love to bring my kids before heading back home to Alberta. How can I see the ship schedule ahead of time? We'd love to go early on Saturday, Sep 3rd. Thanks!
