The story of Terry Fox is well-known. I remember learning about him and his Marathon of Hope in the early 1990s while in elementary school. Terry’s story of hope, resolve and determination resonates with people of all stripes and backgrounds just as strongly today as it did some forty years ago. For this reason, Terry is often viewed as a unifier – someone who can bring us together regardless of circumstance. And that, I think, is a wonderful gift for all of us.

Prior to coming upon this statue, I’d visited three other statues of Terry Fox over the years: One erected in Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park (2005), at what would’ve been “Mile Zero,” or the end of Terry’s Marathon of Hope; another erected in St. John’s (2012), Newfoundland, where Terry began his Marathon; and, finally, one situated outside BC Place in Vancouver (2011). This final monument was created by Douglas Coupland and utilizes Terry as a symbol of hope and courage.

While in Ottawa, I made it a point to visit this Terry Fox statue, which is situated across from Parliament Hill and near the Office of the Prime Minister & Privy Council Building. Created in 1983 by John Hooper (who saw Fox run when the Marathon of Hope passed through New Brunswick), and made of bronze, this statue is one of the earliest Fox monuments created, only behind the Terry Fox Memorial & Lookout at Thunder Bay (1982). The statue features Fox in a “running” position, capturing him in his signature gait. While the statue’s details aren’t as crisp as the newer Fox monuments, the detail of his face tells the tale: His forehead is slightly wrinkled, a sign of determination – mixed with pain – as he ran unselfishly to provide a sincere sense of hope for others. Indeed, the fact that Terry Fox ran over 5,300 kilometers in 143 days is all the more remarkable when you remember his prosthetic leg was not designed for such activity; it was not like the “athletic” prosthetics you can get today.

Terry Fox is a beacon of courage and hope – a true Canadian hero – and someone we can all look up to. If you are visiting Ottawa, be sure to check out this statue, with its apt placement across from Parliament Hill.

Since passing away from cancer in 1981, Terry Fox has inspired millions with his life story. That is why this statue, located across from Parliament Hill, is such a fitting tribute.

Although he was not able to complete his cross-Canada run in his quest to raise money for cancer research, Fox's legacy has been immense. The annual Terry Fox Run, which has taken place for more than 40 years now, has spread to dozens of countries with millions of participants. As of September 2022, more than $850 million has been raised in his name for cancer research.

It is fitting that the Terry Fox Statue is located across the street of Parliament Hill, right in front of the Centre Block. He was a Canadian Citizen with his own personal mission. However, after 40 years, what he did still making impact annually around the world.

Nice Statute if Fox. St. John’s has a nicer one but this one is good too. There can’t be too many statutes of this inspiring Canadian. It’s on Wellington across from Parliament so you’re likely to pass it if you’re in town taking in the sites.

This small but fitting statue is located opposite the Parliament buildings, and is a fitting tribute to one of Canada’s little known heroes.
