About
Built in 1829 as the original home of The Thomas Family, The Thomas House is furnished and presented as a pioneer home of the 1830 - 1840's, with many original family items. The house is operated by the Oakville Historical Society and is open during the summer months when Society volunteers act as guides. A brochure covering the history of the family and the house (with fascinating details of life in the early 1800's) is available for visitors.

While this is a glimpse of our past it really isn't that long ago that the inhabitants of the Oakville are (and elsewhere in SW Ontario) were living in cabins and farmhouses main from the logs of trees hewed in the immediate area. In our age of 10' ceilings and large rooms and bedrooms for every child it is an interesting contrast to reflect on the age of this who grew up in the Merrick Thomas Farm House - one living room, one room for parents and one room for children. No central heating, no AC, etc. - we are so spoiled compared to our hardy forbearers.
A worthy visit especially if one choses to uses it to contemplate on the lives of this who lived just 150 - 200 years ago.

Easily accessible in a beautiful lakeside park in downtown Oakville, the Thomas House offers a relaxed look at how our forbears lived. Manned by costumed volunteers from the Oakville Historical Society who provide great information and the occasional snack. No admission charge but donaitons area welcome.

This is right beside Oakville’s First Post Office so we went here next. Visiting hours posted at the door said 1:30PM-4PM on select days but since Thomas House is a Doors Open participant, it was open to the public 10AM-4PM on Sat, Sep 29.
Thomas House is a small clapboard structure maintained as an early settler’s house circa 1830. The first thing that caught my eye when I stepped inside was the big working fireplace--there was a fire going at the time but I only remember smelling wood-burning smoke when we were outside. Many artifacts on display are said to be actual belongings of the Thomas family. The tiny bedroom is off limits but you could look in from the open door. This is not the first time I have seen an uncomfortably short four-poster bed nor heard the sitting-sleeping explanation. We did not stay long because it got pretty crowded inside when another group entered the house while we were here. After posing for pics at the front porch, we left Thomas House and headed to the next Doors Open site on our list, Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate.
