You might think that an attractive, older house in Oakville would be focused solely on the lifestyle of the people who lived there, but the Oakville Museum is much more. It has an impressive exhibit about the American slaves that came to Canada for their freedom. It features a multi-media presentation that brings alive this part of Canada’s history and helped me understand that life was still filled with fear for former slaves when they arrived in Ontario. This presentation lasts about half an hour. We also had a personal tour of the house itself, which was excellent. I highly recommend you see this hidden gem in Oakville.

Pleasantly surprised by the bringing to life some very interesting local history. Took the guided tour with Alison who as a history graduate knew her stuff. Covered the Chisholm family origins of the house itself and the descending generations. Many original items plus some appropriate items donated by others. Liked the Edwardian Christmas decorations and tree setting. Oakville’s links with the Underground Railroad were new to me, and the space dedicated to this was very informative. Very nice way to spend and hour or so getting to know more about local history.

I really enjoy my time in this museum every time I visit it. It's very informative and has lot's of sweet and interesting artifacts. You learn a lot about Oakville's origins through the family of it's founder. As you walk from one room to another you'll see the furnishings, the clothing, toys etc. The museum often has temporary exhibits the one that I liked was women dresses from 20th to contemporary. You won't regret if the museum is in you itinerary.

Once you dive into Oakville's history you'll be amazed how rich it is. Did you know that the KKK was active in Oakville in 1930! Or that Oakville played a role in the underground railway freeing many black slaves from the US?

The Oakville Museum is made up of several buildings. The primary building is the original estate of Chisholm family that founded the town. Inside you'll find displays about town life during mid to late 1800's. There is also an excellent exhibit dealing with the role that the community played in supporting the Underground Rail Road.
Across Navy Street in Lakeside Park is the original Post Office and a typical settlers home. If you are around for the Mayor's Picnic there will be people dressed in period costume, and music of the Era being played from the Band Stand. The final exhibit space for the Museum is at the QE Park Community and Cultural Centre. It is there that museum assembles from its large Costume collection thought provoking and inspiring Fashion Exhibits. The costume collection is one of the largest in North America.

This is a lovely spot right on Lake Ontario. If you are interested in architecture, everyday living and/or local history, this is a nice little museum to spend 1/2 hour.

This is a great musem in an old house. The grounds are beautiful right on the lake. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the black history display talking about the underground railway connection. If you have an hour or so to wander around - do it.

This town run attraction gives one the sense of local history within the 1800's. Althought it is a small building, the exhibits and knowledgeable staff members make up for this area. In fact, local Scouting was aacknowledged with a display and weekend activity during Scout Week two years ago.

I came to visit this old home as I always wonder about the years gone by.
I love stepping back in time, walking on the floorboards of those before us.
This is a wonderful museum in old Oakville, lots of history about the founding family of this little town.
Take your time to look out the window at the Credit River, imagine the views that Mr Chisholm took in as he watched his dream grow to fruition thanks to that river.
Beautiful....

While visiting family in Oakville we stumbled into the Oakville Museum to view the current exhibit and were swept into a tour. The docent was marvelous and we were so glad to learn about the history of Oakville. The tour ended with a fabulous exhibit on the Underground Railroad that had previously been at the Royal Ontario Museum. Much of this era in the US and Canada was brought to light that we were previously unaware of. We then enjoyed the exhibit of dresses that were inspired by art and the many hats the museum has. This exhibit and tour is great for all ages.
