Welcome to Halifax’s greatest natural and national treasure and most visited site in Halifax, Nova Scotia– a timeless oasis in an ever changing world. A beautiful Victorian-inspired garden open to the public since 1867. 16 acres in the Victorian Gardenesque style; Scroll beds shaped in an E for the reigning monarch, Serpentine beds, raised carpet beds and a profusion of colour through the artistry of our Gardeners. The Victorians were all about education and introduced many new species to Nova Scotia. Check our What's Blooming on our website to discover the highlights of each month. - JohnChambersburg, Pennsylvania5 contributionsA Must-See Attraction In Halifax, NSWe had a brief visit during our walking tour of Halifax, NS and then returned later in the day for a more thorough walk through the park. This is one of the finest gardens we have ever visited, especially considering it is a public garden and not a private botanical garden. We highly recommend visiting it while in Halifax, NS to enjoy the beauty of God's natural creation.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- KarenM1_101,043 contributionsLovely areaWe walked around this area when we arrived on our cruise ship. The gardens are lovely and worth a visit. There are many different varieties of flowers and there are some areas where they provide the names. We saw many of the locals walking through this area with their children.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 October 2023
- GrandTour452506365 contributionsVery Beautiful gardensWe chose this as one of our Hop On Hop Off stops. These were so every beautiful gardens. The variety of trees and flowers was really amazing. This was all kept up well. We were only able to walk around for about 45 minutes but could have easily spent a few hours to see everything here. We were here on a cruise and would definitely say that you should at least get transportation TO the gardens. Walking back (we did) to the cruise terminal is much easier as it is downhill.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 October 2023
- TennisStar602New Jersey712 contributionsI went to the Public Gardens on a Sunday in November and it was still busy and eventful. The Halifax Public Gardens were full of a variety of flowering plants, bushes, and trees. Obviously, great work was done to keep this garden looking fresh. Even in November, these plants were still relatively colorful. There were also plenty of benches, tables, and chairs in this space. I liked the bridges over the stream, and I enjoyed the many statues throughout the park. There was a gazebo in the center of the park, and there was also a very big lake. It was free admission to enter this space. There was parallel parking on the nearby streets.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 November 2023
- JoanneLake Mary, Florida2,137 contributionsnice walkIt was still a bit cold at end of April, but the flowers such as daffodils were all coming up and very pretty. Its a nice walk with not to many people. There is a soccer stadium close by and you could hear the crowd cheering. Parking the group bus was a bit of a problem because most spots were taken.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 April 2024
- SilverOrlovBedford, Canada2,544 contributionsSmall but very beautiful city parkA lot of different flowers and trees are collected in one place. It’s not that you can walk around here like in some big botanical garden, but it’s not surprising why this place is mentioned in many recommendations for visiting in this city. One thing you need to remember is that the main thing is to come here in the season when everything is already in bloom, because in the cold season it is simply a "desert".Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024
- DeedeeWelland, Canada5 contributionsRhodos and AzaeliasWe went to the Public Gardens in Halifax at the perfect time. The STUNNING rhodos were just approaching full bloom. Same with azaleas and lilacs. The roses haven’t blossomed yet, but they’ll be stunning as well. Great upkeep! Bravo!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 June 2024
- Alex HHuddersfield, United Kingdom445 contributionsSuper location for a wander or a picnic.Great way to spend an hour or so. If the weather is nice, grab a picnic from the close by fast food shops Tim Horton, subway, McDonald's and way more and enjoy it on a bench in the park. Plenty of space, loads of benches, quiet and tranquil, enjoy.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024
- Michele PMiddletown, New York468 contributionsBeautiful Place for a StrollBeautiful place to take a stroll and enjoy the well planned English style gardens. Conveniently located by a hop on/off bus stop, we were able to walk right into the gardens from the bus stop. Easy walking paths throughout the gardens with plenty of benches for those who might require a rest or want time admire the scenery. There is a pond area with some shade where you can watch the ducks. A small cafe on site offers an assessment of treats as well as restrooms on site make this the perfect midday stop!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 June 2024

I checked the Halifax gardens website to make sure I could walk through it with my leashed dog. No where on the website did I see dogs were not allowed. So we drove to the gardens, paid to park near by and walked in. We were only there a few minutes when a security guard told us dogs were not allowed, pointing us to the exit where we saw the sign for no dogs, no jogging, no loitering, no dancing, no singing and no breathing in the park. This is a mostly treed park with a few flower beds and some small ponds and statues I can’t see how someone walking their dog through it would be so terrible. This exclusive park should make it very clear on their website that they don’t want dogs in it and I hope no taxpayers money is going to its upkeep.

It is a doable walk from the cruise terminal to see this famous Garden that was established in 1867. We loved strolling—admission is free-- through the 16 acres. The Gardens are open from May 1st thru November 1st.
We enjoyed seeing the fountains, stone bridges, ponds and extensive flower beds. There is an American elm that has survived from the 1860’s. Luckily, it was not destroyed during Hurricane Juan in 2003. Kudos to the city to invest over a million dollars to restore the park after the storm.
There is quite a celebration there at the park during Canada’s Day, July 1st. Feeding the ducks is prohibited. You may even see a wedding going on in the Public Gardens.
Not far is Halifax’s famous Citadel. We found that too be informative and entertaining as well.

I was shocked at how stunning this garden was! I can’t believe that so many different flowers and plants could be so elegantly planted in such designs. My very favorite part was seeing so many bumble bees!! This is what the world needs!! It’s a beautiful attraction that also makes a real impact on the environment. It was a highlight in Halifax for sure!

Take time from your busy day to walk about the Halifax Public Gardens. Step away from the concrete and hustle & bustle to wander about the greenery and pond and sit down on a bench to enjoy your quiet time. Lovely location!

These gardens occupy some large city blocks and have multiple entrances. No admission fee. There are multiple winding paths that take one past lakes, fountains, an amphitheater/gazebo area where performances apparently take place, a coffee shop, and many benches and chairs that invite peaceful reflection and rest. My favorite were pink flowering dogwood trees along the banks of the lake, and some interesting succulent plants.

The Halifax Public Gardens are a beautiful example of Victorian style Gardens close to The Citadel In Halifax. The entrance is a beautiful & imposing iron gate and once inside you are transported to many beautiful displays of flowers and everything is very well maintained. Walking the grounds you can see why this attraction is such a popular one in Halifax.

We always try to visit the Gardens whenever we are in Halifax. This time, many flowers and bushes were at their peak. This park is so well maintained -- it is a great place for a break from work or from touring the city. There was also live entertainment in the band shell. So bring a snack or lunch, and enjoy it in the park. (But pick up your litter!)

We loved going to the HPG on our first trip to Halifax - everything was so beautifully arranged, not just the flowers but the statues, plaques, artefacts and little bridge over the water... all very cute, and we took some memorable pics with our daughters. Some of the flowers have funny names, like "Ketchup and Mustard", I mean the colour shade is pretty much bang-on. I think you could find any given colour in the wide variety of flowers. I'd gladly return on a second visit to Halifax.

We will be coming in on Princess cruise is this in walking distance? About how far?

The Halifax Public Gardens are at least 1/2 hour walk fro the cruise pavilion. One way to do it is to to walk one block up and one block over until you meet Spring Garden Road at Barrington St.. Lots of interesting small shops along the way - Rest and have a coffee in our iconic library at Spring Garden Road and Queen - then its i flat to the Gardens by continuing on Spring Garden Road y walking by the eclectic shops and restaurants to South Park Street and there you are
Another way is to catch the hop on/hop off Bus and hop off at the Gardens then carry on to other wonderful Halifax Historic sites such as The Citadel one of the 9 star-shaped forts in the world
Or you could take a taxi ad walk back !
Enjoy the Gardens - they will delight you! .
