The Lewis exhibit alone is worth the trip. The gallery is located in a central part of downtown Halifax. Makes it the perfect spot to spend a few hours and then head out after for dinner. When we visited in November, admission to the gallery was free after 5 pm on Thursdays, which was such a great bonus. I don't know for sure if that offer is still available. - DavigetaSaint Louis, Missouri1,081 contributionsWorth a visit for the Maud Lewis exhibitThe art gallery has a number of exhibits, which are ok but not especially distinctive. However, the Maud Lewis exhibit is a must-see, especially if you have seen the movie Maudie. Her old home is actually INSIDE the museum, and she drew all over the house itself. Her story and her artwork are both fascinating. We were glad we visited.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 September 2023
- magisjimSpringfield, Ohio71 contributionsNice, friendly museum, worth the time to visit. This is a small museum, well laid out, friendly, with good regional exhibits. The featured exhibit during our visit was paintings by Maud Lewis. It featured her tiny house moved and restored into the museum. Many of her works of art were on display. Many were loaned to the museum by their owners. We were not as impressed with the exhibts on the lowest level. The museum has a nice set of lockers available for use for coats and packages. There was no charge for the use of the lockers.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 September 2023

Her house was her canvas and it is now on display (although not in a frame). Lots of her art to see and pictures of her, too. Great gift shop, too.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2023

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia had several exhibits available, spanning indigenous art and local artists. The Maud Lewis exhibit had a very helpful guided tour available online and there were plenty of affordable prints of Maud Lewis' work.

Just not into it. This is more of a social justice display than an art museum. Lots of preaching, not much art, in my opinion. I did love the display of rug hooking.

The Maud Lewis exhibit is exceptional. Well worth taking in. A large and varied selection of her artwork. A good store to buy souvenirs at.
