St. Paul's Church was built in 1749, the same year as the Halifax colony started. The construction is based on the ground plan of Gibbs' Marybone Chapel in London, with later additions such as a larger tower. Well worth 30 minutes to have a look around. It is the centre of Halifax so easy to get to on foot.

A few blocks east of Citadel and at the Grand Parade [an open square], this Anglican [Church of England] edifice is the oldest building in Halifax, dating from 1750, the year after Halifax colony was established. Halifax City Hall is at the northern end. The building is diminutively modeled after London’s Westminster Maryborn Chapel. It is the oldest surviving Protestant church in Canada. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1981. Don’t expect to find a grand Gothic cathedral. Saint Paul’s appears more to be a two-story house. But isn’t that by definition a church? A house of worship.

We went to the service there. We were very leery to drop in on Sunday, as we are tourists and were concerned that, that would put everyone off. Let me tell you we had nothing to be concerned about. Not only is it a beautiful church, and they have a beautiful service, but the people there are so welcoming and kind!

I often visit the church as you see something new every time. Looking at the dates on the donation plaques make you realize that there were generations of people here long before you.

My Father in Law visited this beautiful Church exactly 70 years before us when he was sailing on Atlantic Wartime Convoys. It was so amazing to take the postcards of St Pauls that he sent home during those dark war years and to see exactly the same views he had then. The Church itself is really beautiful and historic in its own right , being the first on in Halifax and surviving the horrific Halifax Explosion. The staff were so helpful and interesting and they showed a genuine interest in our reason to visit in 2012. It really is worth a visit

St. Paul's Church has its significance importance in local history. It had been built with timbers brought by sea from Boston in 1749 and remained after the Halifax explosion by then. A nice church with quiet garden outside. The Anglican church was still functioning and quite plainly-decorated inside.

Right in the middle or side of a park like plaza- we loved stopping in this old church. Lovely windows and plaques honoring various people of Halifax.
