We walked this everyday during an extended stay nearby, and absolutely loved it! It is Mother Nature at its best! So many trails to chose, great off leash area, well maintained, and clean.

Great walking trail so close to the campground at which we stayed. Able to walk around a bit of Lake Charles on the the trail beside the canal, and then towards Lake Micmac and back on the opposite side. Some interpretive signs provide history and facts of the canal. And even though the signs said not to feed the wildlife, several people were feeding the very cute squirrels and chipmunks of which the were many. If it wasn't for the road noise from the adjacent 118, one could forget that you were in the city.

We live near the Shubenacadie Canal Interpretative Centre and the trails. We spend a lot of time down there. We have kayaks and launch in the pond by the Centre. We can go out the canal into Lake Charles and thorough enjoy making our way through the canal system. The trails and waterways are kept in good condition and are very accessible. Most enjoyable recreation spot!

Well tended walkways, pathways are shared with bicycles. Lots of well-placed 'park benches' for resting spots.

I wish I lived closer to "Shubie Park" and I'd be there all the time. Lots of beautiful scenery here. It is great for walking. I wouldn't call it hiking as it is all wide, crusher dust, pathways with very little up and down. Walking paths are mainly tree covered. You can easily push your stroller anywhere. There is off leash parks and places for the dogs to run into the water. It's also great fro canoeing and kayaking. There are tonnes of squirrels and we saw mallards and bluejays as well. There are a couple of beaches. There are no playgrounds for the younger children.
Paths are a little confusing but it is hard to get lost. There are the occasional maps along the way. Might be best to take a picture of the first one you see.
It is off the Waverly road. Take Locks Road. The main entrance is at the very end of Locks Road, although there is a smaller parking lot just before that which intersects the main walking path. We were there mid-morning on a beautiful Saturday and, although busy, we found a parking spot. When we left an 1.5 hours later, cars were parked all along Locks Road. It was tricky to social distance at the very beginning but the crowd quickly thinned out.
You can even walk across the highway and go to Dartmouth Crossing.
The Fairbanks Centre at the main parking lot was closed. Not sure if this is a COVID-19 thing or if it is only open during the week. There was also a nice little restaurant that was closed. There are outdoor bathrooms there.
Go to Nine Locks Brewery for a beer after.

The story of the Shubie Canal system is interesting and there is a small lock near the interpretive centre. The real draw of this park is the trail system and lake access. Great for all ages and abilities - you can walk or run for as little or as long as you wish. In the summer, gentle sloping and sandy beach access is perfect for young kids. The river and lakes are also popular for canoeing and kayaking, with at least two easy entry points (the main one being off the upper parking lot at the end of Locks Road). Off-leash dog areas are clearly marked and quickly accessed from the lower parking lot. Sections of the trail can get very icy in the winter time, so it's helpful to bring cleats or grips if you have them. Public washrooms are located in a stand-alone building off the upper parking lot. They are usually open during daylight hours. Kids love seeing all the squirrels, chickadees and ducks.

An excellent place to go for a walk either slow or brisk. You can do one loop or several depending on what distance you want to achieve.
