Depending on the weather you may want to bring a picnic lunch and nourish yourself before you begin this extraordinary experience of the old and new. Climb up the Shaw Turret where we commemorated all Black Loyalist communities as you overlook Birchtown Bay. Or enter into the Centre's Lindsey Gallery and dive into the multimedia presentation of the Black Loyalist journey from Africa to the US then to Nova Scotia and back to Africa. Explore the virtual copy of the Carlton's Book of Negroes and search for your ancestor who may have experienced part of this incredible journey. Also explore our amazing archaeological pit which embodies this extraordinary narrative of the past and present. Have fun examining the archaeological artifacts excavated here in Birchtown. Before you leave us please take the time to create a virtual quilt square that will tell us about your experience and how this story has impacted you and what you have learned. Please continue to explore our site and visit our historical buildings where you can view our Bunce Island exhibit and movie, the National Historic Monument that commemorated the 1783 Black Loyalist Landings of Nova Scotia, explore our Heritage Trail and visit the Pit House. Be prepared to spend some time with us.

Fascinating interactive journey through the tragic history of the Black Loyalists in Nova Scotia. Even though this is a relatively small space , the museum provides a lot of interesting information about this important episode in American and Canadian history

This hidden gem is small yet packs a punch and it really needs to be seen to be believed. Interactive displays serve as detailed timelines and the information is concise and easily accessible. Despite its size, you could easily spend a minimum of 5 hours...More

We return to the Black Loyalist Centre at least once a year. It's a truly remarkable presence. It may seem small and unassuming but that's far from the reality. It has depth, character and a friendly, helpful staff. The opportunity to interact and take as...More

We travelled 2.5 hours down to Birchtown to see the museum as we had seen the series that had been filmed here. For a start it took us a while to find as it's not clearly signposted and when we arrived we found a note...More

We have been going to Shelburne for over 20 years now and were saddened to hear about the fire here. In 2015 we visited the new museum and are true believers that things happen for a reason. In this case, a good one as this...More

We visited this centre and learned lots about the history of black loyalists who came to Birchtown in the aftermath of the American Revolution. The building is modern and well designed and the staff were really well informed. However, I wanted to learn all I...More

This is a lovely building offering the history of Birchtown where most Afro American Empire Loyalists settled. You are given a card with the name of a person who arrived there and are invited to do a search about them in their interactive displays. The...More

This was a very interesting place to visit. Wasn't sure what to expect. It was made more personal by following actual people in history of the Black Loyalist movement. A sad time in history. Definitely makes you realize how this shaped our country.

I will be arriving in NC either by ferry (from Maine) or driving in via St. Stephen (help is desirable in making this decision). Should I anticipate spending one or two days in traveling to see the museum before going back to USA? If I need to stay longer where would you recommend I stay?

I agree that a day in Lunenburg would be worthwhile. There are also some very good restaurants in that town. You might also find some intersting thongs to visit in Liverpool, about half way from Lunenburg to Shelburne. I... More
