Decent, not really a lot to see

Walk up the hill....observe...breathe deeply, and be thankful that you can enjoy this historic location on the island.

Lovely to see the lighthouse and the views of the harbour mouth are lovely but the road is full of potholes I did go over my ankle quiet badly and sprained my ankle but the railing is very bad and if it hadn't been for my friend catching me I would have been of the side of the cliff its... More

Drive up a narrow road and park your car where it tells you the last parking opportunity is. Then go for a 5-10 minute walk further up the road. Not really a whole lot to see, so don't plan for this to take up too much of your day. Views are of course stunning.

On the South Side of St. John's is the Fort Amherst Lighthouse. There is an area to park and from the lot you have a 10 or 15 minute walk to the lighthouse. On a sunny day you experience a perspective of the St. John's harbour that is quite spectacular. The walk provides some insightful historical points of interest that... More

Nice view of the mouth of the harbor, downtown St. John's, and the small villages clinging to the rugged and rocky hills northeast of the city. Visited on a sunny summer day in the late afternoon.

This is a great compliment to Signal Hill and easy to get to. The views are spectacular and the lighthouse is a real one so it is nice to experience its authenticity. Dead Man's Trail head is there and the hike up is so worth the workout. Views astound.

If this lighthouse would be anywhere else it would be the star of the show, but in Newfoundland,it serves as a nice introduction to the East Coast Trail. Only a five minute drive from downtown St. John's with a short uphill hike from the parking lot along a paved road. If interested, you may want to investigate the two living... More

Once you get to the lighthouse there are no restrooms. This makes for uncomfortable tourists. Not much parking available at the bottom of the hill.

The lighthouse looked like a replica and access to the fort and gun installations were locked behind ugly chainlink fence. You see more from the north side of the narrows. The cliffs to the south of the lighthouse are beautiful, but the best part of the trip to Fort Amherst is the view it offers of the colourful battery houses... More
