There wasn't much happening here when we walked through, although there were people erecting tables for market stalls. We came back later in the day to find there were indeed a few stalls with vendors selling their crafts. We didn't find any signage commemorating the history of the square. It was somewhat underwhelming. We were there on a Friday - perhaps there is more activity over the weekend?

It’s worth a visit to walk around but many of the shops were closed when we were there. Close by there are some good restaurants and also China Town.

There are a ton of cute and interesting shops here, and the place rewards aimless wandering. It's a people-watching experience, too!

Make sure to do your research before you go. Lots of history here (and some great haunted sites). Ate at Garricks Pub (back in the day this is where men had their last meal before they were hung in the square!)

Cute side street. I wish we would have been there during one of the street markets. Irish Times Pub sits at the beginning of it on Government street.

This tourist area was very quiet during a weekday evening during these COVID times! Hoping the future will bring back the busy times for the shops / vendors? Still have a few options for going to some good restaurants for tasty meals.

Ah, Bastion Square! No doubt this place was named in honour of a certain striped LORD Bastion. Can there be any doubt? He commands attention and, if he doesn’t get it, he definitely lets you know! Thus, it only makes sense that the city of Victoria would name a square in his honour . . . right?

In seriousness, Bastion Square is significant from a historical perspective. Situated on the original site of Fort Victoria, this nook in the heart of downtown is populated with a number of heritage buildings, all beautifully maintained and repurposed. My personal favourite is the edifice that now houses the Irish Times Pub (see my earlier review on this site). Built in 1897 for BMO, this structure hearkens back to the Victorian era – a time when all of the city’s buildings had character. In some ways, it also alludes to Bastion Square’s intriguing past.

In the current day, Bastion Square is basically a nice pedestrian walkway and provides easy access to-from the Inner Harbour. During the high tourist season, it’s also home to the Bastion Square Market. Think of your typical small town Farmers Market, only with slightly elevated offerings. For those visiting the city, this might be intriguing enough but, for me, it’s Bastion Square’s past that holds all the allure: Once upon a time, this quaint area of Victoria was home to a jail and gallows. I can see Lord Bastion ordering someone to walk the gallows for failing to bring him snack treats ;) Okay, enough digression. I can see how some might claim this area is haunted given its rather dark history. Personally, I think the history is pretty cool, but if you’re happy with the Bastion Square Public Market version of this space, then that’s fine, too!

While very beautiful architecture and quaint little pubs with escquisite food, this area is very much haunted. For 2 weeks I helped a local shop owner run his store while he was on vacation. Everyday I would take a shortcut in the alley and damn near everytime I encountered hearing chains dragging on the ground. While never seeing any apparitions I felt as though someone was always around in the dimly lit alley. The feeling I would get daily in the alley was that of hostility and remorse. I would still highly suggest visiting the area just know...you have been forewarned.

I love taking out of town visitors there especially in the summer. So much to do and see from vendors to buskers.
