About
Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

    Very interesting and enjoyable morning
The approach to the castle is very attractive with many large, old and beautiful houses on the nearby roads and an excellent view down over the city from the hill it sits on. There is plenty of free parking. After collecting a wrist band after paying in the nearby small building (which also has washrooms and a shop) we went across the drive and entered the house to be given an interesting introduction by one of the many helpful members of staff. The interior of the building is striking and lined with wood and has numerous pieces of furniture and paintings which are accompanied by helpful brief descriptions of what each room was used for and give some of the history of the family. We spent about 2 hours and really enjoyed exploring the rooms. This was the first time we had visited the castle after many trips to Victoria and we are really pleased we eventually went.

    Plan to visit, definitely
Beautiful and fascinating, reminds us quite a bit of Larnach Castle in Dunedin, New Zealand. Love the history of the Dunsmuir family and the building itself, which has undergone many lives, from a hospital to a school to an historic landmark. Many of the rooms are completely renovated though the process is ongoing - can't wait to see the kitchen when it is restored to it's original glory. Stunning craftsmanship. The tour is self-guided so you can go at your own pace, reading and imagining as you go along. There are docents throughout, extremely knowledgeable and able and eager to answer your questions or explain anything in more depth. Beautiful gift shop!

    Step back into time
This is a lovely castle which is well preserved to showcase its rich history, built at a time when Victoria was at the height of its power and reputation in Canada. This is not a huge castle by the standards of European castles. The castle still has the furnishings from the 1890s, beautiful staircases & stained-glass windows. There are numerous pieces of furniture and paintings, all accompanied by a brief descriptions of each room and some history of the family.

    Interesting Castle
Craigdarroch Castle is a MASSIVE house in Victoria with a unique history. It was interesting to hear about all the different uses this house has held over the years and there were a lot of historical items throughout the house. Some areas could have been staged better but overall, not a bad experience.
Thank you very much for your review! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit and the history of Craigdarroch.

Quint looking castle tucked away in the bylanes!
The castle is open Thursday to Sunday. We were supposed to reach Victoria by sunday noon, so we planned our visit in the evening. Unfortunately our flight was late and by the time we reached, the castle was closed. Was able to go around the exterior and take some pictures!
Thank you very much for your review. We are sorry to hear that your flight was late and you were not able to visit inside. But we are glad that you were able to get some nice pictures of the exterior. We are open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-4pm and we hope to welcome you back another time.

    Craigdarroch Castle Visit
Very interesting visit to Craigdarroch Castle. The film helps to tell the story of the Dunsmuir family and the subsequent use of the house. Interesting to read about the trust’s future plans too. We were able to get in for free as National Trust members which was an added bonus.

Very interesting place to see, learn and feel it’s history
The castle is well maintained and its story unfolds as you make your way through this beautiful structure and home. Attention to detail helps to lay bare somethings that may have been kept quiet “back in the day”. Take the time to read the stories about the former inhabitants. There are large poster boards one can flip through to gain a good sense of who they were. Each room is carefully displayed with pieces of the time to depict what life was like. They certainly forged ahead and got as many comforts of the day that were available at that time. You have a full view of Victoria and as it is built on the highest point, the castle can be seen from all below.

    historic home throughout the 1900s
Beautiful historic home. They did a great job highlighting the various eras of habitation, and describing how they will continue to restore the various rooms to represent different periods and inhabitants. I did find it difficult to track the original family members and their stories; this could have been done much more cohesively. Overall very well done.

    Beautiful castle
We really enjoyed this self guided tour. The castle itself is beautiful to walk through. Lots of wood, period artifacts and interesting facts about each room. We purchased our tickets along with the hop on hop off ones. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Victoria.

We really enjoyed our visit to the castle. It is a beautiful place that has been lovingly restored. The guided tour information, signs about the family and their livers and the history of the house make for an interesting afternoon. One of the best things to do in Victoria.

This place is breathtaking from the outside. I don't recommend paying to go inside, it has been modernized and feels like an ordinary house. It has modern lighting, power outlets in the walls and heating sometimes in front of the old fireplaces. Was a swing and a miss for my family.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide some feedback on your visit. When Craigdarroch was completed in 1890 it was built with electrical and gas lighting, working bathrooms, a telephone, central heating and many other modern conveniences for the time. Some of the modernization you are referring to were installed when Craigdarroch became a Military Hospital in 1919. They installed additional radiators and made several modifications to the building. Thank you again and please feel free to contact us directly if you would like to provide more feedback on your visit.
