The Maple Tree square, where the "Gassy Jack" statue and Vancouvers own Flat Iron building are located is a great stop on a stroll through Gastown. Located where in which Vancouver received its name it is definitely worth the stop if you are into your history.....or selfies!

In the past we came here many times a year, however not in the past 25 years. Lot's of the stores have changed, this palce has aged with time, however it's still part of Gastown & work the visit!

This square -- now essentially the intersection of Alexander, Water, Powell and Carrall streets in the Gastown neighborhood -- is where Vancouver began in 1867. That's when John Deighton opened a salon here.. A nearby maple tree (now gone) provided shade for the first city council meeting. History buffs would likely find a quick stop to be of interest. The... More

This area is the first drop off on the bus when arriving in Gastown. It is the place of the steam clock and lots of souvenir, clothing, gifts, restaurants etc. Also lots of beggars and people trying to get you to part with cash for "medication". One woman looked totally gone with huge wide staring eyes claiming she was schizophrenic... More

This is home to a somewhat iconic flatiron style building, the first reinforced concrete structure built in Canada, originally built as a hotel but now converted into residential accommodation. Facing the building on the opposite side is a statue of 'Gassy Jack' in part responsible for the early development of Downtown Vancouver having built a pub on the shore to... More

Here you will find the Gassy Jack statue and detailed information about this and the nearby Maple Tree. The hotel opposite reminds me of the Flatiron Building in NYC. There are plenty of eating places here too as it is part of Gastown.

We visited Maple Tree Square in Gastown yesterday on our visit to the area. The square is most famous as being the center of the old, original Vancouver city, and also for the statue of Gastown legend 'Gassy Jack'. The square is surrounded by nice buildings and some interesting shops. The statue is good for a photo opportunity, if you... More

Statue of Gassy Jack in this quaint square in Gastown area. This is the historic centre of Vancouver and you need to go here to discover the heart of the old city back when it was first settled by loggers and fur traders.

I was having a really good look around this fine city when I came upon Maple tree Square, A nice little open intersection with the Hotel Europe on one corner looking like a cross between A quaint central european town hall and the Flat Iron building in New York. On the other corners you have a statue of Gassy Jack... More

Staying in Gastown

Neighbourhood Profile
Gastown
A visit to Gastown is like turning back the clock and stepping into a bygone era. With the distinction of being Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, the many plaques that stud the cobbled streets of Gastown tell the story of its colorful past, giving Vancouver's history a more lively presence here than anywhere else. Having been originally founded around a popular worker's saloon, it's no wonder that today some of Vancouver's best micro-breweries, creative cocktail joints, and corner bars can be found in this area. Classical charm suffuses its many vintage boutiques and the brick-built structures that an army of creative professionals call home.
