We took the little aqua ferry from Nanaimo harbour over to Protection Island for lunch at the pub. Most people do not know you can do this but I highly recommend it. The ferry cost $7-$9 per person (round trip) and takes about 10 minutes to cross. Once we were done lunch at the pub ( ferry ran one the... More

We spent an afternoon at protection island, walking down pirated-themed streets and enjoy the water views. There is only one business hear - Canada's only floating pub. It's a quiet and peaceful place but watch out for residents in their golf carts! Views to Nanaimo are very pleasant. It's a 10 minute ferry ride but the ferry can be hard... More

I've been on the island quite a few times and really enjoyed it. It's actually a residential island with free standing cottages and summer houses on spacious lots, often with orchards in the back yards. Fruit is offered along side the roads in Summer time, often for free. Small boat services the island on a regular schedule for a low... More

If you make it to Vancouver Island, then make sure you plan a day to take the little ferry over to protection. In fact, if you like to camp, there's some tenting sites over here. There's beautiful trails and you can get amazing views of the city's downtown as well as the open ocean. Make sure to bring along food... More

Beautiful community just a ten minute passenger ferry ride from Downtown Nanaimo. Impossibly I visit without dreaming of what it would be like to live there. Fun to explore and the locals were super friendly. Watching everyone going about their days on golf carts was a hoot!!

Catch the ferryboat at Nanaimo Harbour - it runs every half-hour during the day. It docks at the Dinghy Dock Pub, which is a popular spot for an evening tipple, especially in the summer. Aside from the pub thee is nothing commercial on the island. People who have houses there enjoy their privacy and most have some sort of boat... More

This little island nestles in Nanaimo harbour and 'protects' the main harbour from the winds of the Pacific Ocean. . .and the Island could have served as a bulwark of first defense in WW II, had an attack occurred. To access Protection Island, locate the Coast Bastion Hotel. You can then just chicken out and ask at the front desk... More

Protection Island forms part of Nanaimo harbor. This island is approximately 1 mile across. It can be reached by boat or ferry. There is a regular ferry service year round (approx. $9 CAD round trip) the ferry takes you to the first marine floating pub and restaurant in BC. The food is excellent with non touristy pricing. Sit on the... More

We had a fun ride over to the island on the little ferry, a delicious dinner at the PUB , and after that a walk around the island. It is a must do if it is good food and some fun . Wish I were closer, it would be a regular visit for me.
