Opal Hills was an interesting hike for my friend and I. We went in May when there was fresh snow on the mountain. We went left instead of going right like most other people seem to have. I'm not sure if we missed another fork, or if we lost the trail due to the snow, but, we didn't complete the... More

Good easy hike in the fall weather before snow and ice starts to form the trail. I found this trail to be moderate compare to other trails. If you stay to the left on the entire trail apparently it leads you into the valley before the inclined portion of the hills. I took the right trail which is a shorter... More

Completed this walk in 3.15 hrs. I'm reasonably fit and the walk is steep but definitely manageable for anyone with moderate fitness. It is steep, so don't expect it not to be strenuous. If you'd rather less exertion the walk around the lake at the carpark is nice. There are great views at the top and lots of animal sign... More

It is a step ascent but lovely going through the trees to emerge in a wide meadow. Great views all round and we saw two Moose.

This was my first hiking experience and yes, it was brutal due to the incline, but rewarding once you reach the meadow area and some good views. We took the right path on the way up which is the more steep part. Not much viewing on the way up besides little peeks here and there of the lake. I had... More

We hiked the Opal Hills, which is rated as one of the top 10 hikes in the Rockies. It was a strenuous uphill hike through a forest with absolutely no views of anything but dense forest trees. The lookoffs indicated in the Jasper and Maligne Lake GemTrek map and the Backroads 2016 GPS map, do not exist. If you leave... More

Great hike to get away from the crowds, we only saw maybe 3 other groups the entire hike. When you get to a fork in the trail, I recommend going to the right first. Hike to the lookout at the top for a amazing view of Maligne Lake. Then continue on to the alpine meadow. We were there in August... More

Starts off at Maligne lake car park, easy to find the trail just look out for the signs that Parks Canada had put up. Beginning of the hike is basically an approach to the foothill of the mountain where the steep uphill begins. After about 2 km of uphill it levels out and comes to a fork in the road,... More

Was a great hike, loved the views! Had it's strenuous moments, but which hike doesn't? Hold on to your hat near the top, can get very windy!

We spent a week in Jasper this summer. Of the 4 hikes we did this was our least favorite. By no means does that make it a bad hike, but I definitely wouldn't do it again and wish we had done something else. The climb was very difficult and we did not feel that the "reward" was worth it, we... More
