- Vincent C469 contributionsLovely Place but needs more ParkingConsidering this locatipon offers a 1hr in and out hike, it NEEDS a larger parking lot. On the way up to Jasper we gave up on this palce due to the cars. On the way down it wasn't as busy so we visited it. The upper falls is by far more pretty and accessible. The lower falls was nice but not sure if it was worth the hike.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2023
- SabesPittsburgh, Pennsylvania52 contributionsBeautiful, gushing falls through a canyon. Lower falls have three falls in one.Upper falls were stunning. Short, easy walk from parking lot with fast gushing water. We couldn't imagine the Lower falls being even better per the reviews but the Lower falls were as beautiful and gushing as the upper falls but there were three falls in one. The hike down is a fairly easy, gradual downhill hike over roots and rocks. You are rewarded with several photo spots along the way. We took our time coming up and at age 65 and 66, we did the entire Lower falls hike in an hour. Don't skip it if you have the time.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 September 2023
- JobylakeOttery St. Mary, United Kingdom1,176 contributionsVery busy in high seasonEven though it was busy on the day we visited, it is still worth the stop. Be prepared to wait to park the car. It is a pleasant walk around the falls and canyon areas. It would be better if there was more picnic benches around to enable people to stop, sit and watch the world (and water) go by.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2023
- luv4phoodMarietta, Georgia845 contributionsVisit late in the afternoon for lighter crowds. There are lots of beautiful falls and canyons along the Icefields Parkway. The Sunwapta Falls were our last stop after a long day of sightseeing on the parkway. We were fortunate to find the falls nearly empty. Most visitors make a quick stop a the upper falls. There is also a longer hike of about two miles round trip to the lower falls. If you have the time, it is a nice quiet hike. The lower falls are not as impressive as the upper falls.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 February 2024
- Elsa C. L.New York City, New York4,953 contributionsAlso a must enjoyScenic views of mighty sounding and looking upper and lower waterfalls on a sunny day with deep blue skies. The upper water falls is not far from the parking lot. There is a path that does not entail a deep descent and ascent. The lower waterfalls is a 1.2 km hike with some inclined trail portions. The trail also has tree roots above ground. There is a shorter return path away from the fence.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 June 2024

54 kkm south of Japer. Lost of parking space and a short walk to the falls. Sunwapta means roring river. I loved this place even more than Athabasca Falls and there were less people here. If you go here you will have beautiful light from the sunset over the falls and the mountains. Absolutely stunning!

The falls were really beautiful. As all Rocky Mt falls tend to be, but the real delight of this area is the Sunwapta Falls Lodge and Restaurant. We were treated like royalty by the staff at the Lodge. ANd the food was really really really good. The shop amazing but nothing beats the care and service of the entire staff.

The falls are not quite as impressive as nearby Athabasca Falls (Athabasca Falls are larger), but Sunwapta is definitely worth a stop if you are driving the Jasper-Banff Highway, as it is only a short drive off the highway. The canyon downstream from the falls is also very impressive. Lots of parking.
But please - don't ignore the signs to stay behind the fences. The fences are there for a reason. It was very disconcerting to see two or three people climbing the fences and getting very close to the falls so they could get photos beside the falls. People die at this location every year because of that behaviour.

Everyone is so rude and pushy in both jasper and Banff National parks. Cannot take it in anymore, adults will literally run over children to get a closer look. If coming to Canadian Rockies I highly recommend avoiding jasper and Banff National parks as well as the ice fields Parkway. Sure the falls are nice but the Rockies have nicer and way less people. On a 10 day road trip through mountains and only experienced this type of behaviour in the national parks, go ANYWHERE else in the Rockies just not here!

It's a short walk from the parking area to take in the falls surrounded by stunning nature. It was far less busy than many of the other stops along the Icefields Parkway.

I saw these falls in September in the evening around 6 pm and they were nice/scenic but I expected them to look a little different based off google photos. I thought they were still beautiful but I wasn't as "wowed" in person as compared to seeing photos online. I preferred Athabasca Falls to this one.

Definitely worth the stop. These are not as stunning as their local neighbour, Athabasca Falls, but still worth a visit. Car parking I believe can be an issue in peak times, we arrived mid afternoon and it was fine for us. It is a short walk from carpark to the fall. Do note that the way down can be slippy, so good footwear or just taking care is essential. But it is nature at it's best and well worth a visit.

I enjoyed watching this waterfall, and the color of the water was really gorgeous. There were many maintain paths for individuals to traverse. It did get crowded in this area, but I thought that it was less crowded than Athabaska Falls. This waterfall was further from Banff National Park.

Yes the parking area is right off the highway and the walk down to the falls is not vey long. Probably less then 2 minutes.
