About
Your Columbia Icefield experience begins here. Check in for your trip, relax in one of the restaurants and learn more about the icefield through interpretive displays inside the Glacier Discovery Centre. You’ll then begin your 30-minute trip to the glacier, travelling by bus before traversing off-road terrain that includes a steep moraine slope aboard a purpose-built Ice Explorer.

    Cool, stunning, informative!
It was an absolutely amazing experience, we got information on getting a Park Pass for Jasper and found out we could get an annual one. Great food as well, I had a three price set of chicken, although they were out of fries and that’s what should have come with it, it was still great. Amazing scenery from the outdoor seating with a magical view of the glacier. It’s sad to think it used to cover the full of Canada and half of the USA yet now it only covers about 8km. It should be gone within the next 20-30 years sadly because it is beautiful. There is much more I could add about the great mini-movie and little exhibits about the glaciers but that would take to long going on and on about how wonderful they were. A solid five stars from Ellie Reviews.

Walking on a glacier - a unique experience!
If you are looking to experience nature up close and personal, this needs to be on your "must visit" list. Especially since the glaciers that make up the Columbia Ice Field are disappearing rapidly (see photos below). I was initially a bit hesitant to actually go out on the glacier ice, but with a good pair of hiking boots and my trusty poles the footing was fine. Everything is well organized, and you can choose whether you want to visit the Skywalk or not - just stay on the bus and you'll be brought back to the Discovery Center. I think it does help to purchase tickets in advance, as I noticed a pretty long line at the ticket counter. We didn't have to wait in line for anything. A note if you are mobility/stairs challenged: there is a graded walking path up from the parking lot, but access to it is not well marked.

    Education is awesome 👍🏼
“Marc with a C”! 😂 it was an absolute treat to ride in style with his 1.3 Mercedes Benz engine and getting to see his “backyard”. ;) He shared informational comments, comedy, and his communication skills are 10/10 - he had us we’ll entertain. Overall, it’s an educational experience and I’m glad I got to experience it.

More than just a ticket office!
This large purpose built centre is the ticket office and gathering place for the Icefield Explorer Glacier tours. However, it also operates as an information centre with a display area (downstairs) providing detailed facts and particulars about the glacier and surrounding area. There is also a movie available to watch. There is a large deck upstairs which affords lovely panoramic views of the area. Amenities include: a cafe, washrooms, seating and a gift shop.

The message here is that the Icefield is disappearing because of us and climate change, yet they run buses back and forth all day to the glacier. They also charge you to ride out onto the glacier in the ice machines but don’t worry about trampling the glacier while they rake in the profits! It’s a National Park area and should be respected as such!

Columbia Icefield Glacier tour:
Pass up that expensive and time consuming tourist trap!
Lot’s of waiting, standing in line, 4 bus changes. Tour took too much time that could be better used seeing other sights. Good glacier views and hikes can be done without the $130/ person cost of tour. The tour “glacier experience” is walking around a very small area of slush with lot’s of people and buses that are damaging to the glacier.
The “Skywalk” bridge is not worth the time or money. The view is very similar to views you can see at many of the pull offs &/or short hikes. Not nearly as high or “spectacular” as advertised.

We ate at the Chalet from their cafeteria line. The Grain salads and the Poutine were all good. Pleasant place to eat.

This is a pretty good base from where you can start your exploration of the nearby attractions. There is a good gift shop and Starbucks for coffee or snacks. Plenty of other facilities as well, but essentially, the base of operations for all the attractions.

We had a very positive experience in the gift shop. I bought three postcards totaling three dollars and change. My husband gave me a five dollar bill. The cashier, Chris, told me I should not use that because it is now worth around $20. I was using old paper currency left over from my husband‘s last trip to Canada. My husband was standing behind me and didn’t hear the whole conversation so he took out a two dollar bill and gave it to me. Chris told me that that two dollar bill is worth around $100 now. He explained that Canada‘s currency has changed and they are no longer using the old paper money. That was so very nice and honest of him to do. Thanks Chris for being such a good guy. We really appreciated it.
