Whyte Avenue (also known as 82 Avenue) is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed, and now runs through Old Strathcona. It was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911. Old Strathcona is Edmonton's main arts and entertainment district, and is also a shopping hub for local residents and students at the nearby University of Alberta. Whyte Avenue, now a heritage area, is at the heart of this district, housing many shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

It it still one of Edmontons most visited streets. Mind you, we did not see anyone sitting Outdoors this time of the year but there was plenty of activity in most of the stores. Our G.Daughters had a blast.

The most vibrant area in Edmonton, with restaurants, bars and pubs. Grocery stores with healthy organic food, mostly family bussines, boutiques, gift stores, flower shops, fashion boutiques. The place where in the summer most of the festivals are organized.

Lots of cafes, restaurants, bars, shops. We stayed at a hotel in this area and even though it was cold outside-we still wandered around. This is a much more pleasant area to stay compared to downtown as everything is within a few blocks. It does...More

I read the reviews on trip advisor to go to this up and coming area. It is still very much in transition as a police arrest going on when I first arrived attested. This is full of low grade pubs, head shops with a very...More
