Whyte Avenue (also known as 82 Avenue) is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed, and now runs through Old Strathcona. It was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911. Old Strathcona is Edmonton's main arts and entertainment district, and is also a shopping hub for local residents and students at the nearby University of Alberta. Whyte Avenue, now a heritage area, is at the heart of this district, housing many shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

There are a lot of unique little stores and eaterys on this street that are easy to miss if you just drive down the street. I sugest taking the time to walk down one side and back up the other. you will need good day as it is easy to get distracted in all the little shops. There is food... More

"We should hang out on Whyte Ave more often", I said to my husband as we made our way to the Princess Theatre. The street is alive with people and culture. We could have, and wished we had, made a day of it or a night of it -- or both. There is so much to see and do. There... More

Whyte Avenue is a good place for an afternoon or evening stroll, especially in the warmer months, with many good restaurants and coffee cafes. The Princess Theatre is worth keeping an eye on as they often show unusual or special films. The Fringe Festival in August is a must-see, especially for visitors.

In terms of restaurants and amenities. This is the hub for all things. It has a great farmers marker, close to walking trails on mill creek and near the University of Alberta. The other great thing is the music scene. Can't ask all food is great but all amenities would paint a picture of Edmonton

I enjoy taking a walk down Whyte. Whether it's by myself, with friends, during festivals going on nearby or not. There's a great atmosphere with a number of eclectic shops a cafes/restaurants. The bar scene at night is lots of fun too!

We visited the Whyte Avenue area prior to Christmas on Dec. 19th looking for something unique for a friend. After visiting a few shops we were disappointed we didn't find a Christmas gift that would fit our needs. Many of the shops we had visited in the past years have disappeared and now there seems to more restaurants than ever... More

Whyte Avenue is one of Edmonton's best known places to spend time. There are tons of excellent restaurants, bars, exciting nightlife with live music, antique shops galore and just an overall great place to grab a drink and do some people-watching. There are eclectic clothing shops, vintage clothing shops, bookstores, gift shops and in the summertime, it is a great... More

More like the European street of Edmonton. Good for the young at heart. Close to the University and downtown.
