Wonderful place and worth a day trip from Santiago. We made very good experience with Fundacion Sewell. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff - they are the experts!

Views are spectacular and the history is interesting. Commentary a bit political, but probably necessary.

This is a great place to visit. It can only be done on an organised tour which fills most of the day. I went with some friends on the VTS tour with Ali, our excellent guide.

My full review is on the Trip Advisor page for the Tour Sewell: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g659540-d7196309-Reviews-Tour_Sewell-Rancagua_O_Higgins_Region.html

Even with only some 25% of the site still around, the site deserves its World Heritage Site designation. This was a classic company town situated on the side of hills in a very rugged part of the world in the early 1900's. As an active mining site, we could not go underground but there was enough history passed on with our guide to get a very good sense of the dynamics of the time. North Americans had their entertainment areas while the locals did too. Class dynamics were involved. The greatest loss of mining life [355 souls in a 1945 fire] took place here as did a murder leading to very unusual empanadas. In the middle of the proverbial nowhere, the town was complete with a bank, a cinema and a church. Almost all of the bowling alley is original. The tour ex Santiago is a long day of some 11 hours. We were lucky enough to see condors in the Andes. While the time at Sewell is about 3H, you do pass by mining operations to get a flavour of this giant mine which has worked 24/7 for over a century.

Sewell is a mining town full of history. This town is located at the Andes mountains, in the 6th region of Chile and is more than a hundred years old. It was built to make the life easier to the families who had a member working in the mines of El Teniente. I recommend a guided tour for visiting this place or doing a deep research to get to know everything about this important old town. You only can visit the town on a touristic and authorized bus, but dont worry: there are plenty.
The town is conformed by a hospital, a church, a bowling, a pool and a lot of residential buildings. This place used to have all the novelties of the period, being an advanced city when we refer to modernity.
The town is abandoned and there are no basic services in the town itself, like restrooms, food services, not even cafes, so if you are planning to go you need to be prepared.
If you are planning to go, it is a 2,5 hour trip from Santiago de Chile. You need to be prepared for the col during winter, but if you visit during summer, it will be very hot and you will need to wear sunscreen.

The town itself is very cool and the guides give you a very good a robust history of the town. It was expensive however and I didn’t really know if it was worth it for just a day trip there.

I was transferred onto this tour as I had booked direct with the Sewell Fondacion and there weren't enough people. I was worried about VTS because of some of the earlier reviews, but the tour went way beyond my expectations, and Barbara, the guide, could not have been more helpful in ensuring that I understood everything in English. Yes, doing the commentary in two languages can be a bit boring, but while she talked to one group, the others could look around, and I never felt we were missing out, even thought there were only two English speakers.
This tour gives you so much more than just the WHO site. You travel through a massive mining operation, and see and learn so much mind-boggling information about the copper mine. The 'city' itself is really still in the early stages of restoration, so the buildings are not that extensive nor accessible, but they have made the most of what is there and it was all interesting and most of it also well signed in two languages.
My only criticism of VTS would be that they undersell their product! It is a long and full day - you don't get lunch until the end of the day, at 4.30. And it can get quite cold up there. Also I didn't have quite enough time at the good museum at the end. And I would have liked to know more about how the copper is produced - that part of the museum was only in Spanish.
But I am very grateful to Barbara, and Angelica at the Fondacion, who arranged this for me.

Sewell takes you back in time to the first copper mine in Chile and the largest one in the world. And it is still operational. The scenery is jaw dropping. A must see sight a couple of hours away from Santiago
