About
Lulworth Castle stands majestically in extensive parkland at the heart of the Lulworth Estate, close to Lulworth Cove. Built in 1608 as a hunting lodge to entertain royalty,it was purchased together with an estate of 20 square miles, by Humphrey Weld in 1641. Today the Estate still remains in the ownership of the Weld Family. All but destroyed by fire in 1929 the Castle exterior has been restored by English Heritage while the interior has been consolidated providing a magnificent open plan space. Within its displays and exhibits, cellars and memorabilia discover the fascinating story of its past.Climb the tower for spectacular panoramic views of the Purbeck countryside and towards the Jurassic Coast - an experience not to be missed. St Mary's Chapel, in the Castle grounds, is historically significant being the first stand-alone Roman Catholic place of worship to be built after the Reformation. Inside soak up the atmosphere and tranquility of this special place. Please note that jousting no longer takes place at Lulworth Castle.

- BAHScotland12 contributionsMost enjoyable visit to Lulworth Castle and the jewel of neoclassical architecture that is St Mary's ChapelA wonderful visit to Lulworth Castle and grounds. The car parking ticket covers the Castle, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door so you can visit all three on the same ticket. Being a Monday in November it was very quiet but that suited us well and we received a warm welcome from the lovely girl on duty for tickets. The views from the roof of the castle were spectacular, well worth the climb. The castle interior was burnt in a fire in 1929 but what is left has much of interest, especially for those who like history and architectural history. But the jewel in the crown is arguably St Mary's Chapel close by the castle, which was built in the 1780s as a Roman Catholic chapel and is still in use. Designed by John Tasker, it is a perfect neoclassical gem of a building and justifiably described as one of the finest pieces of Georgian architecture in Dorset. The Church of St Andrew's also close to the castle has a 15th century tower.Thank you for your review, we are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to the Lulworth Estate and hope to see you again.Written 22 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023
- essexgran2016Essex, United Kingdom266 contributionsFascinating Castle and Lovely GroundsFollowing on from Durdle Door we arrived at Lulworth Castle set in a small charming village and arrived in a reasonably priced Car Park. The Castle set in large grounds was very interesting ( although I hadn’t realised it was basically a shell ) having been destroyed by fire and then “saved” unfortunately not fully restored. However it was very interesting and photos of how it looked before the fire are exhibited…. Such a shame they couldn’t save it. Fascinating details can be seen on the walls and here and there are blackened beams still in the walls. You can climb one of the four towers and be greeted with outstanding views of the countryside from the top. On the basement floor there are fascinating facts and actual footage of the fire which sadly destroyed the Castle. The Tea Room does a lovely Scone Cream Tea and has a small shop within it. There is a nice garden and picnic area close to the castle and some “ games” for the children to play. Had it been a warmer and drier day we would have happily stayed far longer and explored the grounds more fully. In the grounds are the families private Chapel and strangely the Village Church both of which are open to visitors. It seems the Church was once in the centre of the Village but once the Castle was built …. They very “ kindly” removed the village and had it rebuilt outside the grounds …. Leaving the Church isolated .Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear you had an enjoyable visit and hope to see you again soon.Written 1 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 March 2024
- Colin BEtchingham, United Kingdom384 contributionsWell worth a visitWell worth a visit to this interesting building, the climb up the staircase to the roof is well worth the effort for the great views. We didn't use the tearoom as we prefer something more substantial for lunch than the tea and cake on offer, even sandwiches or a pasty would have been acceptable. Our next stop that day was Corfe Castle so we had lunch there, I know a lot of visitors would prefer a few more food options, not a criticism but a suggestion for possibly extending the range on offer.Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your visit to us. The castle tearoom offers cream teas, cakes, snacks & ice-creams whilst the Weld Arms pub just outside of the park is able to offer lunches and something more substantial for our visitors.Written 29 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- MIKE O5 contributionsIF WALLS COULD TALKAbsolutely ace place! Brilliant value for money, polite staff, expertly-maintained grounds and a castle steeped in history. Following a devastating fire in 1929, the place had become almost a ruin. Cleverly, some inventive and creative people have made a walk round the ruins into an indoor treasure trove of architecture, history and intrigue. Stripping back the walls to reveal the core building is a master stroke. Hidden history, in fact and all the better for the need to use one's imagination. Cafe prices are fair and the cake was the best we had all week. This was a great afternoon out for us.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we are pleased you enjoyed your visit and your cakes.Written 9 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2024
- Simon19622014Crawley Down, United Kingdom13 contributionsSurprisingly enjoyable!Turned out to be a good choice of somewhere to visit on a wet Bank Holiday Sunday! Good value and although was initially disappointed to learn was a shell of the former castle because of a devastating fire in 1929, in fact was really interesting! Lovely calming atmosphere and fascinating to see the architecture that would usually be hidden. It's been lovingly protected from the elements by English Heritage and is often used now as a fabulous wedding venue. Really helpful friendly staff too!We are glad you came to visit and enjoyed yourselves, we hope to see you again.Written 9 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024
- Emma SBasildon, United Kingdom200 contributionsWe spent longer here than we thought we wouldWe are members of English heritage so decided to visit, not sure if we would have otherwise? Parking is £3 for the whole day but if your park in Lulworth estate for the day you can use the same parking ticket here! We got round the castle in about an hour, reminded me of a mini downtown Abbey. Nice to learn the history of the place and how it had evolved. You can also walk around the church, chapel, gardens and normally the peacock place but that was closed when we were there. The giant staircase in the tower is nice to see over the castle. Highly recommend the cream tea! And we also made good use of the free lawn games. Friendly, helpful staff , thank you!Thank you for visiting and leaving us a review, it sounds like you had a great time. We are rethatching the barn near the peafowl enclosure so for the safety of our visitors we have closed the access whilst the works are finished. It should be open again soon.Written 9 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024

Good price £9.00 per adult which allows entry to the fascinating Castle, the tower, the museum & the Chapel. Well worth the money. Very impressive on the outside, but one soon realises that after the fire of 1929 very little survives on the inside. Enjoyed walking around the extensive grounds.Thank you for visiting. - Routier, pauvre et chantant10 contributionsA wet visitVisited on a very rainy day, having been before a few years ago. The castle has been gutted by fire, and it’s a shame it’s not as it once was. They’ve made the best out of a bad situation here, though, and told the story well. It’s interesting to see the building methods etc that have been revealed by the fire. The basement floor is full of information, although some of the exhibits are slightly dated now. One of the ladies doing the tours was very interesting. She was so enthusiastic, and the group kept getting bigger as she was talking! Also visited the Catholic chapel on my way out. It’s a nice little space but again the exhibition is very dated. All in all, a nice couple of hours.Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your visit and the history talk.Written 19 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 August 2024

A lovely drive to the castle booked on line so was easy to gain access once there the grounds and wood walk are free so just access to the castle is paid for.
Had been restored a bit not a lot as is a shell really as not got all the floors but interesting all the same. Parking is good £3 for the day.

Popped in to see the property whilst in the area. £3.00 car parking seemed a bit pricey, but you can be there all day for this. Entrance to the castle itself is just £6.00.
The castle itself is effectively just a shell following generations of historic underinvestment, and a major fire in 1929. HOWEVER the current owners have undertaken a restoration protect with English Heritage, and the fruits of their labours can now be seen - a long way to go but Rome wasn't built in a day.
You can walk around the castle and glimpse how it must have looked in its heyday. Can also get to the top of one of the 4 towers and look out in a full 360 degree panorama.
The gardens have a few lawn games to pass the time (mini golf, quoits, connect 4) and there is also a small area where tea/coffee and small snacks can be purchased with plenty of outdoor seating.
Overall, well worth dropping in to see if you are in the area, to link up with the other attractions in this part of Dorset.

The family and I spent a very pleasant and interesting morning at Lulworth Castle. For the £7 entry fee you are met by very nice staff and then allowed to wander around the identified route at your leisure. The Castle is well preserved and there are interesting facts as you proceed around. Make sure you summons the energy to climb to the roof as this has spectacular views and you are told on placards what you can see in the distance. The grounds and surrounding countryside is beautiful. The parking was £3. The coffee in the cafe is very tasty. Well worth a visit and really good value for money

The castle looks beautiful and the grounds surrounding are lovely.
However there is not much to see inside as it was all destroyed in a fire,
We thought for children’s sake they may have redressed it so that they could see what the dining room and other rooms may have looked like.
You also have to pay for parking which is a bit cheeky as you have to pay entrance to the castle too..

Thank you for your review and we are pleased you liked the appearance of the Castle. The car park fees go towards the upkeep of the parkland, grounds and children’s playground which can all be accessed without purchasing a ticket into the castle itself.
We do hope during your castle tour the children took part in the hunt the bat competition and enjoyed exploring the basement museum showing how life below stairs would have been at the time of the devastating fire. We are very lucky to have worked with English Heritage on the consolidation of the ruin after the fire to protect what was left but sadly it wasn’t possible to restore it fully. Many of our visitors prefer the rustic nature of the upper floor as it shows the techniques and materials that went into building the castle. The Chapel which is also part of the ticket was unaffected by the fire so hopefully you saw that too.
Unfortunately, the tower is closed at the moment as social distancing cannot be maintained but the lovely sea views can be seen from the back lawns.

Despite much of the site being destroyed by fire some time ago, there is still plenty to keep you occupied here. The inside is being restored and there are features on the fire and the response by the local guides. However the most interesting part was the chapel which is someway from the main building so remember to seek it out.

Literally the worst welcome I have ever had to any event ever.
We arrived at 10pm on Thursday having scouted the website to check everything would be open like trolley hire etc and found nothing to suggest it wouldn’t be.
Two and a half grand on two yurts, no one could or would help me on the way in. Didn’t get the stuff promised in the advert, no one knew where to go, no one could help with anything beyond giving wristbands and vaguely pointing me in the direction of the tents. Rearranged the furniture neatly breaking my toe because whoever thoughtlessly set it up didn’t consider the fairly steep slope it’s on (now we feel like we’re sliding off the bed downwards rather than off the side which is an improvement of sorts). Went back to the car and got to security at 11:45pm weighed down with bags and was told to go down the only uncovered channel as it started pouring down with rain to get searched, and have finally made it back and am in bed fuming at the experience (with a can of cider which as I drink it and let of steam things are improving).
I kept my mouth shut because I don’t want to give people a hard time what with Covid etc but never again.
Time to forget the arrival, sleep and enjoy the festival tomorrow. Rant over.

We visited as a family as are English Heritage Memberships and entry is free.
The Castle and grounds are very well maintained with excellent staff on hand to assist. We were very impressed with the level of details and care taken to restore the buildings.
There is a lot of information to read and take in and I would recommend reading everything to get a better idea of history of the place.
There is a lovely café with plenty of room outside if its a nice day.
We would recommend visiting the peacocks as there are some lovely views and a play park for the younger ones.
I would also recommend visiting both of the churches located on the ground's.
Overall we had a really fantastic day, and we will be returning.

Easy to locate, large car park. Staff lovely and very helpful. Castle was beautiful,
stripped back walls showed a real sense of the castle and its character. Route through great with lots of information about the castle. Had drinks and delicious cakes from the tearoom and sat outside in beautiful surroundings. The chapel is lovely too with a beautiful ceiling.

It is advisable to enter the Castle. There are am and pm slots. It only cost £7 for admission to the Castle and grounds and the chapels plus car parking fee. It could get crowded and therefore oversubscribed on any particular day.

Other than the parking charge, do you have to pay to go into the grounds and look around? I know there is a fee to actually go in the castle but can you get on and look around for free (other than parking)
Thanks ☺️

Hi,
First time going to a festival & second time camping.
4 x ladies in late twenties going for a boozy weekend from Thursday to Monday. Weighing up our options for transport - do we get train (£50-70pp) or does one of us drive (£15 parking + £40ish petrol shared between us so a lot cheaper). The main downside of driving is being stuck in traffic for hours on end..how bad is it getting in and out of Lulworth?
We are also trying to figure out if we can squeeze 4 people, 4 bags and a couple of tents into a peugeot 206... hmmmm.
Any ideas welcome xx
Written 24 July 2018
I would recommend public transport - roads busy at best of times, never mind with festival traffic. One less thing to worry about too.

You pay to park in the grounds and this covers you walking around the park amd grounds.
If you want to visit inside the castle and two other attractions in the grounds there is amcharge of £5 for adults. If you are a member of English Heritage you can go in free I believe but you still pay for parking.
I hope this helps
