Strolling about the historical centre we came across this great area the locals call their mini Paris. a wonderful tree lined small park with sidewalk cafes and facing this unimposing church. Lucky for us the caretaker happened to be at the door, and answered our questions and told us some history and stories. The chapel - church is stunningly beautiful . It adjoins one of the oldest local buildings which was an old convent. There are small windows on the wall of the chapel where nuns would come to do their confessions. Make sure and visit the convent , now a music conservatory right next door.

Just walking along killing time and we come across this church, previously a convent. There was a sign outside in English and Spanish. It says that the church is attached to a school which the purpose was to educate poor or orphaned Spanish girls and widows. For some reason, the way it was done then, the nuns were hidden at the back of the church behind bars. Really interesting to see the set-up. Right across the street from a small park/garden. One of the many gems Morelia has to offer.Follow me for more reviews.

We were on a walking tour of the Centro Historico, and had a very knowledgable local guide. He took us into the Santa Rosa church and pointed out the grille in the back. He told us the nuns needed to stay behind the grille to hear Mass, as they were not allowed to be seen in public. We also noted the little side chapels, also covered by grilles, so the nuns could pass to and from the convent to the church. I was taking photographs of the side chapels, and a security came and reprimanded me. There were no signs saying that photographs were not allowed, so I'm not sure if the guard was just exercising some authority for kicks.
There is breathtaking woodcarving throughout the church, much of it covered in gold leaf. I was especially impressed with carvings of cherubs, which resemble ship's figureheads.
It doesn't take very long to visit this church, but it's worthwhile. If you're in the area of Jardin de las Rosas, by all means take a few minutes to look at this lovely example of baroque architecture.

We spent some time in this lovely and ornate church with incredible art work in the rear gallery area. I recommend this church because it's smaller and seems different from the dozens of others we've seen in Mexico over the years. Also, it's across from the Jardin de Roses which is a beautiful, restful place for a cappuchino and some people watching.

We stumbled upon this church by accident, and were very glad we did. Its humble exterior conceals a gorgeous interior, with ornate wood carvings and lots of gold leaf. Don't miss this.

Charming old church in colonial city of Morelia. Build of pink sandstone typical of most colonial churches and old 16-17 century buildings in Morelia. Lovely tree-shaded park across the street, great for lunch or a drink. Fun to watch locals meet and greet there.

Although incomparable to the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, this is an unusually pretty church that is worth a pop in with the carved wood painted in gold leaf and the carved faces. Very pretty.

This centuries old church is a don't miss it. Beautiful altar covered in gold. Lovely old church as well located within a 3 blocks of the main central cathedral plaza.
