This well laid out market has cute cosas to stuff in your suitcase: tin work, textiles, pottery, jewelry. Vendors will barter ... a little. Nice visit. Far nicer than Guanajuato market.

Not to be missed, even if you’re not a shopper and aren’t looking to buy. Excellent Mexican crafts, jewellery, pottery, clothing etc. , all in one place. Feast for the eyes! The vendors are friendly and helpful, for the most part. No pressure or hard sell. Some will bargain, within reason. Overall, I found the prices quite reasonable but they do vary from stall to stall. Not to be missed.

Handicrafts, street food, silver, textiles - they have it all here. And it's much less 'curated' than the shops around the square in SMA. We actually went over there twice and found something special both times. Friendly vendors, good values.

We really enjoyed walking the three block stretch of this mercado. So many beautiful and reasonably priced items. We stopped at the tail end and enjoyed some gorditas with nopales. Make sure to take some comfy shoes and a big bag for all your goodies.

When you’re visiting San Miguel de Allende this is a must visit. If if you have no intention of buying anything it’s worth your time. So many things to see and great people watching.

Obviously, you'll want to take something back with you from Mexico and THIS is the place to buy it. I enter at Hidalgo and de Luz streets. There's a pharmacy on the corner and next to it are stairs that take you down to where it starts.
SMA is known for "tin" and they make a lot of tin products in SMA. I had an artist paint a picture of Frida Kahlo on my tin heart Christmas ornament for 150 pesos ($8.00+/-). Anything you find here in any of the shops is negotiable--much more so than in the stores anywhere in SMA. These shops sell most products that are made in SMA and also those products from other parts of Mexico. Silver jewelry, shirts, blouses, shoes, talavera, toys, folk artwork, copper, glass, baskets, fresh flowers and tin hearts, etc. can all be found here. You can start at Hidalgo and walk through the mercado until you come to the food and produce market known as Ramirez which is huge, colorful, exciting and interesting.
You can exit along the way too and visit the stores on the streets. I walk through the market probably three times a week and it changes every time. I simply love looking at everything and you cannot see it in one day!
You can eat in the market too but I haven't. Many Mexicans do and the cost is much more reasonable than in the restaurants.
I have purchased many fun and inexpensive things to take back to California. It's all very reasonable, colorful and provides memories of our four month stay in SMA. I have negotiated with every store vendor I've purchased anything from and it is expected. That is not the case in most of the stores in el centro.
Take your camera with you because you'll see many photo ops. Be sure and wear comfortable shoes because it's a very long walk and most of all WATCH where you are walking. There are many uneven surfaces, uneven stairs, uneven curbs and many obstacles that can trip you up! SMA is known as "The City of Fallen Women" so do not be one of them!
Before you enter the Ramirez market you must climb a steep set of stairs. Half way up there is a public toilet and you have to pay 5 pesos to use it and you have to pay 1 peso for a piece of toilet paper! Be sure and pay for the t.p. BEFORE you enter because there is none in the stalls! Enjoy, have fun and do not trip.

Yes, many of the people are just selling things that are sold all over, but at lower prices. But if you look hard enough, you'll actually run into unique art and maybe even the artists themselves. It's a big place, and you feel like you're actually in a Mexican artisan market.

This market has everything you can dream of and more! It's full of life, energy, color, and food. Be sure to keep walking and exploring every nook and cranny because the market goes on and on into the streets once you have exited the main building.

We were on our last full day in SMA and needed to find a few trinkets to bring home to the kids and co-workers. This was the place! Great market with something for everyone. Huge produce and food areas, worth taking a walk through. At first pass, we thought a lot of the art vendors had the same items, but this turned out not to be the case. Take the time to actually walk into their stalls. You will discover some really fun items, like Day Of The Dead artwork, painted pottery, tile inlaid pewter boxes, etc... All very reasonably priced. Nice walk from town as well. This market is situated in a vibrant area and is a hub for locals. Definitely recommend a visit.

The Mercado de Artesanias in San Miguel has a great variety of locally produced material in small shops, mostly family run, it seems. Lots of jewelry, clothing and Mexican art in what must be 100+ shops. The prices are favorable when you do a little bargaining which is expected. A must-see for first time visitors to SMA.

We are trying to get to San Miguel de Allende from the Moroleón area. Does anyone know what the safest and easiest way to do so would be? We asked one his company, but the into route there arrives around 9pm. We’d prefer a daytime route.

There is an autopista that runs from Moroleon to Celaya, once in Celaya it is about one hour to San Miguel -- buses run regularly along both routes. Check the map and ask if you need specific details.

Looking for those thin brass mirrors. Please help
Written 29 March 2018
yes, the glass and brass is easy to find, one of the real traditional handicrafts of the area, check in the mercado de artesanias, and if not there, check a couple of the handcraft stores on zacateros, there is one near electra that should have that sort of product. Good hunting !
