We took a guided tour with 3 Amigos. It's expensive, but our guide Ivan was wonderful. IF you have a chance, spend at least a couple of days in Batopilas.

We hired Cesar Gonzalez Quintero as our tour guide in Creel for 5 days. The 1st three days were visiting the sites at the top of Copper Canyon. The last two were driving down to Batopilas and then out to Urique and Divisedero on an unpaved one lane dirt road (this is recommenced for only the most adventurist of travelers but worth it). Cesar spoke excellent English and did a good job of explaining the history of the area and showing the sites. Cesar figured out that my buddy and myself wanted to hike and would drop up off to hike and tell us where he would meet us. An excellent trip with spectacular scenery made better by an excellent guide.

2 couples spent 4 days 4-wheeling from Miramar hotel down into Batopilos overnite - then on to Chihuahua and Casas Grandes.
Beto is honest, personable, and extremely knowledgeable of the entire Copper Canyon > Chihuahua area. We did the local day trips from Creel, then to the bottom. List your ideas/interests and Beto will accommodate for your enjoyment. HIGHLY recommend!! Don't miss the hot springs

We decided that we didn't want to do the long drive all the way down into the valley floor of the canyon but instead take in all the stunning scenery along the way as far as La Bufa and it was really worth it. So many amazing photos and then we turned back to return to the comfort of our hotel and restaurants in Creel.

We booked our tour with Authentic Mexico Travel. Dave's team of Gustavo and our personal tour guide Noel were awesome. We experienced locations, people, culture and food we never would have experienced without Noel. Many thanks Noel, Gus and Dave and you will be highly recommended by us.

In February of 2018 I visited Batopilas, our group of 10 arrived by dirt bike from Urique, before heading to Creel. The views in and around Batopilas Canyon are amazing. For anyone who appreciates natural beauty it is a sight to see.

During our visit the town was quiet. When walking the streets you feel like you have stepped back in time. The locals were friendly and welcoming. We stayed at Juanitia's, which I highly recommend. In town and in the surrounding mountains you will encounter the Raramuri indians wearing their brightly colored traditional clothing. If you are visiting the Copper Canyon area don't miss out on visiting this town!

Regarding security, I felt safer in the canyons than I would leaving a 6th street bar in Austin Tx at 2:30am. You will see cartel activity throughout Copper Canyon. This may include teenage kids with rifles riding around town in the back of pickups. It could mean a armed checkpoint if you are traveling the backcountry at night or find yourself somewhere that you shouldn't be. Travel during the day and mind your own business and you should be fine.

We had high expectations, but the reality was scary. I've traveled to Mexico 5 times, Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, France, Japan, Korea, China (twice). Of all those travels, I never felt in imminent danger. But the drunkeness at Batopilas was scary as hell. We and all the other tourists boarded ourselves into the hotel, and stayed up all night listening to the screaming and crashing, which didn't calm down until about 3PM. I was glad to leave that hellhole on the 6 AM bus. Of all the great places to travel in the world, Batopilas would rank among the absolute bottom.

Tiny little village at the bottom of a beautiful canyon. There is a finished, two lane road. However, the inside lane is covered with rocks that have tumbled down onto the road. Drivers treat it like a one lane road. Slightly harrowing.

Driving down is just the beginning of the adventure. The picturesque little town of Batopilas will win your heart. Stay a few days and hike to the "Lost Mission", or just wander the ruins of the old mines and smelting factory. Several small restaurants offer authentic local food. I hope you like Tecate, because it's the only beer in town!
