Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

The ruins at Tulum were wonderful. We visited with a tour group and enjoyed hearing the explanations about the different ruins and learning about Mayan culture. It is quite a walk from the stores where you buy your tickets to the front gate. Also, at while you are the stores make sure you use the restroom. There are no facilities... More

The ruins & beaches were beautiful. Be ready to walk a bit but some of path up to ruins is shaded. Make sure you DO NOT buy anything from the people at the bottom of the road where you enter or get off bus. I think it's a complete scam. Walk straight up the road passed the big market area.... We were with our 5 and 7 year old kids and thought that a trip a few hours away would be too much for them so we started with these ruins close to home. Did a private tour which was nice-about an hour and modified some of the rougher parts of the Mayan story appropriately for young children (i.e. Sacrifice... More

The only Mayan ruins on the sea. Gorgeous ruins, well labeled, lots of people, little shade. Signs in Spanish and English. Shopping near parking.

Pictures can not do this place in justice. It's beautiful!!!!! Windy weather kept us off the beach but nonetheless we loved it. The only bad part is the actual ruins need a more literature. You will leave I awe of the beauty but in suspense in what actually happened to the people.

Had a lovely visit to Tulum. It was easy to see how the people lived there and we learned about how smart they were in how they built on the water and how they build their structures. A must see.

Awful experience. Crowded is an understatement. The ruins aren't in fact all that impressive compared to many other Mayan sites - go to Coba instead. No shade. Nowhere to sit quietly to enjoy the atmosphere.
