My husband and I visited early in the morning on a Tuesday. Cute little zoo and very convenient to walk around. Animals look well taken care of. Lots of food vendors and coke/water machines. Even a food court to relax and cool down. The Mayan structure has an elevator that goes to the top. Free entrance. Not a ton of animals but enough to keep your interest. Take bug spray and small coins for the bathrooms.

We visited the park on a weekday so it was fairly quiet; the park covers a large area though limited animal species. The lion enclosure for me is too near the public walkway and I felt uneasy. All the animals looked well cared for.

I was so surprised in this place. A free zoo in the city with giraffes, lions, zebras, flamingos, crocodiles, others animals. Beautiful place. I really recommend it.

We visited parque Animaya on the outskirts of Merida. From the tall observation tower, we got a magnificent view of the area. And particularly of this former quarry that was repurposed to make a park. Exotic animals live here, and they are impressive to see! Children can go on a small train to take them around the park for free.

If you are bored and need something to do. The little boat ride is fun if you can get a ticket. Wanted to try the safari but their English isn't good so some miscommunication. Not many animals and a bit run down.

Travelling to various places I always expect things that are free to be just ok, nothing special, especially if they've been there for a while, so I didn't have high hopes for Animaya.

How wrong I was. I kept getting the feeling that I must have blagged my way into the paid bit. From the boat trip around the lake, to the open bus trip around the park, this is a great experience. The park seems much larger as you wander around. If you take the elevator to the top of the ornate tower near the entrance you can look out over the whole zoo (and a significant part of Mérida).

This zoo is unlike any other in that everything is accessible and easy. The animals are much closer than in other zoos (even the old Mérida zoo).

If you arrive at the end of the day you will have missed all the tickets for the boat and the bus, but as you walk around the park, if you're lucky, and are prepared to drop a couple of hundred pesos into the keepers hand, you may be able to ride in the truck with them as they go around and feed all the animals, thus getting even closer than otherwise possible.

Well done, Mérida, other state run facilities can learn a lot from Animaya.

The line is longer than the ride around but very fun and very cool seeing the animals wander around with you in the truck.

Not a huge fan of Zoos in general..
I think when this one is completed it will be a must see..
You are in the cage ( so to speak )..riding in a wagon pulled by a truck. The animals are literally surrounding you or ignoring you..
Right now....there are none of the larger animals, such as lions, tigers etc..( they are still at the very small zoo in town )..
The animals there..just mill around with one another..
giraffes, zebras, water buffalo, camels etc...
The monkeys are on their own Island..so much room...
It is a work in process..More trees to be planted & area for the large cats..
Right now the admission is free..

I had a lot of fun there. Is a nice place to spend time with the family. Great guided tour (like a safari)! There are food and water vender machines. Recommend to wear sunblock and natural fiber clothes (is a very very hot place)

Take a boat ride or safari bus ride right in where the animals are. Fun! This is a different kind of zoo. Ride the elevator up the tall tower in the middle of the park and you can see for miles!
