- BerthakiArequipa, Peru278 contributionsBeautiful collection and exposition, awesome information and staffThis museum is located in Palacio Canton, one of the beautiful mansions along Paseo de Montejo avenue. I arrived there almost 1 h before they closed and they told me that I could enter without paying. It was a wonderful visit. They had exhibitions of Ek Balam and Palenque sites at the first and second floors, respectively. In the first floor I could also see a couple of archaeologists restoring one of the recently found sculptures. The second floor was even more interesting, they had information everywhere in Spanish and English. Even a section explaining Mayan writings. It was awesome and amazing to learn all that. When I was leaving, the guard gave me a couple of postcards with Ek Balam designs. I loved them! Thanks Mérida, people are really awesome here.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 February 2024
- David APort Perry, Canada30 contributionsWell CuratedA beautiful old mansion with a well-curated display of artifacts and information from both the Palenque and Ek Balam excavations. A QR code link allows english speakers to learn about the artifacts displayed (the written commentary is in spanish). WiFi is available at the museum but does not work well on the second floor.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2024
- Dear Little TravellerCancun, Mexico211 contributionsFantastic small museum in a gorgeous building!Fantastic small museum with different exhibitions and a gorgeous museum. They even have a section where children can colour and read. Security guards were very informative and explained part of the building history to us. Fantastic place. I would only suggest to write the exhibit cards also written in English so everyone can understand what they are viewing. You’ll need at least. 1.5h to visit. Fabulous way to spend your day and learn a little bit more about Mexico.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 August 2024

Not sure why we were recommended this museum. It is a beautiful building. Downstairs has some good exhibits - all exhibits in Spanish and the English guide doesn't seem to follow the room layout. Upstairs was an exhibition of photos. Managed to get round it in about 20 mins (the review saying they spent 2 days is, I think, a reference to the anthropology museum in Mexico city and not this one). Left here and went straight to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya (strangely were told not to go here). That was an excellent museum so I suggest going there and skipping this, especially if you have limited time.

So much Mayan history represented here, it is very impressive. For my wife and I , not being able to read the descriptions in Spanish made it difficult to understand all we were seeing. It was impressive and informative, none the less.
Upstairs, the efforts to do aerial photography and cartography of the Yucatan were on display. One didn't need to read Spanish to be able to appreciate what had been accomplished through the years. The aerial photographs displayed are breathtaking.

We had a wonderful visit. Bottom floor maya artifacts were very interesting and worth seeing up close (all information is in Spanish just in case you do not read Spanish!). The upstairs exhibit was also beautiful with embordiered items of an artist highlighting maya women. My daughter and I enjoyed it. Besides the exhibits, the buiding is worth seeing.

Worth a visit if you are strolling down Paseo de Montejo. Building is pretty impressive.
Items in the museum are not Mayan exclusive either. Some Aztec items as well as toltec, etc. Not all items are the real thing either. Some copies of the original.
After you visit the museum across the street go to El Barrio for the best breakfast or lunch in Mexico. Also Pan Koffee is just around the corner - best coffee shop in Merida.

The artifacts are amazing and the entry fee is so reasonable (I think around $5USD), but since we are not fluent in s Spanish, we did not get as much out if as we could have. There is no English translation that I saw. it was still a very neat experience.

There may have been a way for us to find this out ahead of time but when we arrived there were two special exhibits that we understood displaced the usual things. Both were interesting, one on Maya language(s) and the other phots taken from the air. The photos covered old as well as more recent photos of various sites as it was possible to be shocked by the development. My last trip was in the late 1970’s and a lot as changed.

Visited the Museum in Jan 2020. Two excellent exhibits, one on Mayan hieroglyphics which pre-date written language as we know it, and one with historical and current air survey photographs of regions around the Yucatan showing topographical changes. Both were informative and not overwhelming - just the right size! All in Spanish, however; no English sub-titles. We would return.

What are your hours of operation on Friday/Saturday? How much USD does it cost to do the tour? How many pesos?
Do you have a website where I can review your information about the museum?
Written 10 April 2015
Admission was 52 pesos (Jan. 2015) but I believe it's free on Sundays. Note: closed Mon.
