This is worth a small detour while in Merida. It is full of large murals that show historical or cultural aspects of Merida and the Yucatan.

This is a great building to walk through. Won't take long, but do linger over the many murals by noted Mexican artist Fernando Castro Pacheco. They are placed primarily on the second level. The art is history of Maya as well as this area of Mexico after the Spanish arrived. Make sure you see the ballroom that overlooks the town... More

Very nice place to visit next to the Cathedral with huge painting from Mexican artist about Mexican/Yucatecan history. Located next to the tourism office. With this visit, you can understand more about Yucatecan history

Beautiful Palacio. The artwork inside is really amazing! The murals around the walls depict alot of the history of the Yucatan. A must see in Merida!

There are two painted murals on either side of the entrance worth a glance. The building you see from the zocalo is just a facade and behind it Is what appears to be just offices. Not much else to see here but I am sure it was a grand place in its day.

The main square in downtown Merida is bordered on all sides by historical sites worth visiting if you have the time. The Governor's Palace is not interesting in and of itself. What we enjoyed seeing was the art murals displayed throughout the structure by the famous Mexican artist, Fernando Castro Pacheco. There are, I believe 26 of them throughout the... More

There are several enormous paintings by the famed Yucatecan artist Fernando Castro Pacheco, showing the history of the Spanish conquest and the Mayan revolution. These are in the gallery. Then there is a large room full of more paintings by Castro, of famous people and events. This is one of the great art installations in Merida, and it is free.

Beautiful Historic colonial building with open air courtyard. Inside are three floors and a local artist's painting. On the top floor is the artist's paintings that cover the history of the Mayan people. Most all descriptive plaques have an english translation. Very emotional and moving.

The Governor's Palace is a lovely building in itself. However the series of murals in the upper floor long gallery depicting highlights of the history of Merida (a lot of it not pleasant) are excellent.
