Richart Sowa built Joysxee, the Floating Bottle Island by himself, with over 150,000 plastic bottles. Shown on MTV Extreme Cribs and Ripley's Believe It or Not, the island that floats on bottles is an ecological masterpiece. Everything on the island was built with recycled materials from the three story house, to the out door bar. Come tour Joysxee and meet the incredible Richie, a real life Robinson Crusoe. An experience you can only find on Isla Mujeres.

We were staying directly across from the Floating Bottle Island and had a delightful tour of it by the creator, Richart. What a fantastic idea he has had and has constructed this floating island in such an amazing manner. He is delightful and thoroughly enjoys sharing his ideas and his creation.

Richart Sowa is a British carpenter who built an island out of plastic bottles and trash. It supports his three storey home. He's happy to give a tour of it and answer questions for a $5 per person donation. He's a gregarious fellow who believes he's found a solution to the world's endless garbage and the coming end as prophesied... More

The approach to the island is all fenced off, making it hard to see. It appears that the owner has not been around in a while. I kind of wonder if he has deserted his creation, and whether it is still all floating. It would be more worthwhile to visit if you could get closer.

Richart is a delightful eccentric whose charisma is exceeded only by his passion for his project. We entered by a path just to the right of the viewing fence and with a smile and a wave we were invited into this unique home for a tour. He has an incredible desire for making the environment better for us all..and is... More

We'd often driven by this but never knew what the deal was. We had seen this house on one of the travel channels back home. It was nice to get a chance to meet the owner and get an opportunity to see the inside of the house. He truly is an amazing man.

I was looking forward to hanging out with Ritchy and seeing the floating bottle island. We made our way there via our rented golf cart. The entrance to the dock was all fenced off and Ritchy was down there working. I shouted at him and he stated he was too busy and the water was too shallow to take anyone... More

This island does not look anything like you see on line. It is overrun with vegetation, you can barely the island, the sail boats around it block all the views.

You can get close than we got, but to see an island built on milk jugs so that someone can live there and even grow their own vegetables is a wonder to me. It's compact and complete with raft for floating in the ocean and a boat to row back and forth from island to land.

Visiting Richart Sowa's floating island is always a highlight of a trip to Isla Mujeres. His creativity and ingenuity is amazing. From his shell-a-phone to the way he collects rain water to his ideas of how to generate energy using waves is so very clever. I can't wait to see his island available on Air BNB!
