To start with we were annoyed as, getting to the park, we waited 45 mins in the reception for the pick up. They tell you to be there 15 mins early and then they were late. It was a huge coach blasting loud music with very loud people on and different hotel pickups. We are a couple in our late 20s just for reference and it was even too much for us. I recommend just making your own way there for your sanity. When we got on the way, the actual drive to the park however wasn’t too long - around 20 minutes.
The walk down to the boat from the entrance to the park is a little way, with a wobbly bridge and a little steep in places walk way, so I’d suggest wearing comfortable and sensible shoes :). There are shops etc. along the way.
We were first to get on the boat and, again, had to wait a loooong time for the boat to fill up so we could leave as people were shopping, in the bathroom and/ or walking around. On the boats, there are coolers with beers, some dips, pics de gallo, fried crickets in the middle to share and on each person’s place some tortillas and what looked like pork scratchings on. It was very tasty. My husband loved the crickets and ate loads of them!
When it eventually left, we initially felt a little isolated as everyone else on the boat was Spanish and talking all together. Although I can speak a little bit of Spanish, we had difficulty keeping up with the conversation. We had also specifically pressed for an English speaking tour guide when booking, so it would have made sense to put us on the boat with the American groups that were there. Our tour guide was great and did speak fantastic English but often just spoke in Spanish - I suppose majority rules.
Floating along the waterways was cool, we even saw a little raccoon on the way! Other boats were chanting, singing, playing drinking games and chugging beers. Our tour guide had everyone introducing themselves, taking shots of tequila and drinking beers, It was a little frat boy style but we are English and love a drink, so really enjoyed it - I can imagine it would be a different experience if you don’t like drinking alcohol. We drank SO much tequila. By the end, the guide had everyone drinking it out of the bottle together, so we felt more included and people then made more of an effort to speak in English and us in the best Spanish we could.
Set up around the park are mariachi and other traditional Spanish music/ bands where you stop off for 1 song and can get up on the boat, listen to the music and dance. A lot of other boats stop at the same time so it is a great community feel and was super fun. By the end, many tequilas in, we were all dancing around the boat, in a conga line around the table and having a great time.
One of the stops was to get the mains of traditional Mexican food. It was all absolutely DELICIOUS! And nice to hear about all the food and where it comes from in Mexico and its origins. After dinner, we stopped off at this island for 15 minutes so they could clean the boat and we could all go to the bathroom. We really enjoyed this stop as there was music and people dancing and having a great time. The staff all really worked hard to clean the boat, turn it around quickly and set up for dessert. Once back on the boat, we were again guided through all of the different Mexican candies which they were cool to try, some nicer than others, as we floated back to the dock.
Unfortunately, again there was another long wait to leave and go back to the hotel as people took their sweet time coming back to the bus… god only know what they were doing and our poor guide was trying to corral people back. At this point we were desperate to go back. It’s a shame a nice experience is spoiled a bit by all the waiting.
Would recommend as a one off experience but definitely get your own transport there so that it doesn’t feel as long!!

We highly recommend this adventure. Whoever sells you on this won't give it justice. It was the top 2 things we have done in Mexico in over 15 trips in 6 years. Great experience, great food, cool vibe, etc. You definitely get your money's worth. Don't pass on this if you get a chance.
The overall park, the boats, the entertainers, and the experience overwhelm the senses in a great way. I can't recommend this enough.
Oh....and eat the crickets....when are you going to get another chance...lol

Had a phenomenal time on this excursion, and would definitely do it again/recommend to those who are visiting Cancun. We visited with our family of 14 (mix of teens & adults) back on August 4th, 2023. Our boat was Viva Xplor Fuego and our guide was Giovanni Cruz who was INCREDIBLE. He was charismatic, humorous, kind, and provided our family as well as other guests on the boat a great time. We appreciate you....GIOVANNI, GIOVANNI, GIOVANNI (the chant we did for him on the boat)! I think he needs a raise because he was truly the life of the party!! We still talk about him even almost a month after the trip.
I will say be prepared to dance, have lively music around you, and depending on the time of year you go..SWEAT!! Even though it was a hot August night, the experience we had made it worth it. All individuals of our party from the youngest of 12yrs to the oldest of 60yrs had a wonderful time. The food & dessert was a nice portion as you get to sample everything. There is also non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks aboard the boat for guests to chose from. This is a night time excursion and offered I think every day of the week except on Sundays.
This is a night party atmosphere so this is something to keep in mind when traveling with young ones, and there is also the presence of alcohol, but we found it appropriate for the group we traveled with (however, if we had younger kids this might not have been the first choice of activity as it is also long--I think roughly 3-4hrs from hotel pickup, the boat ride itself, and drop-off back to hotel). The atmosphere wasn't a problem for us even in spite of most of the family not being alcohol drinkers. We were just fine :) Pro tip: we carried handheld fans and this helped to combat the heat. Also don't forget to apply bug spray.
Also need to recognize our boat driver Tirzo who rowed the boat all by himself the entire night and had good charisma. As well as the van driver from the hotel and back Juan. Lastly, Miguel (drink refills) as well as Itzel & Idalia who were the primitas who came on board to bring the food and clean up during the excursion.
Great service all around!! Thanks Xoximilco & Giovanni for a wonderful time :)

This was an awesome experience. I was a bit skeptical at first but I glad that we went. I was in Cancun to celebrate my 50th birthday with family and friends so it was enough of us to fill a boat. I highly recommend this unique experience.

This tour is amazing!!!! I have been twice, with this being the 3rd time.... everything was great except we stopped only for one song at each gondola which was not as fun for me. The past times we stopped at each gondola played two songs then we went on to the next. THIS time Tour ended pretty fast since we only stopped for one song per gondola. Would like for the tour to last a little longer and stop at each gondola for 2 songs like the other times I have been. Besides that it was great!!!

Dinner & dancing on a boat? No this so much more than that it is so so so so fun. You ride in a big chalupa that seats about 25 people. There are lots of boats, like 20+. Lots of tequila and beer. The also have sodas & Jamaica too. They Stat you with some appetizers, then like 6 course dinner & finally like 9 different desserts. ALL FOR YOU! (They are small portions). It's a lot of food though. They tell you about what your eating and while all this is going on, you're going though the canals there is a guy in the back pushing the boat with a huge pole. (Like a guandula). It's very interactive lots of dancing laughing and drinking. Its expensive but well worth it.

I am writing this opinion in English although I went with a Spanish speaking group (friends and family from Spain and Miami) as I think the information I am going to give is more useful for Americans/Europeans to have the correct expectations. Our group of 19 included people of all ages, from 3-75 years. We were joined by 7 others on the boat, from Chile, Peru and Texas.
Quick overview:
Originality/Design/Ambience: 5 stars
Organisation of activity: 5 stars
Entertainment: depends
Staff: 4 stars
Comfort: 1 star (hot and cramped)
Food: 2 stars (see below)
Drinks: 3 stars
Suited to: Latinos, or those that want to have a “Latino” style night and like to drink and party, adult groups.
Not suited to: a couple’s romantic night out, people looking for a gastronomical or real traditional experience, young kids, adults or adolescents that don’t want to join in/dance.
Biggest problem was comfort: although they warn you about the mosquitos for which you can prepare with repellent, they don’t tell you that the boats are very cramped, the chairs hard and utterly uncomfortable for people with long legs - I do NOT recommend for tall people that are not planning to dance. And tbh there is no real space to dance, the area at the front of the boat slopes upwards and there is a very real danger of falling off, as we were told had happened on more than one occasion. You kind of have to stay on the spot and dance around the table. This excursion would not pass any strict European/US H&S tests, but they make you sign a disclaimer.
The worst is that there is no air conditioning, no fans, and no light breeze in the canals - and in the summer months it can be so horribly hot and humid, that you might well be wringing out your clothes at the end of the night. I don’t personally sweat much but I don’t remember the last time I felt so utterly drenched and uncomfortable. It’s probably much better in winter. We live in the south of Spain but are unused to the humidity of these tropical climes, while those from Miami used to A/C, and the discomfort put most of us off dancing. Wear extremely light clothes and ladies wear your hair up…
Also, although the boats have no engines or fumes and don’t move much, people with travel sickness will still need to take something.
Entertainment: this very much depends on who is your entertainer and who is in your group/ on your boat. Some people are up for a party, others are not, this evidently puts a dampener on things, even if the entertainer is good. Some of the humour is a bit crude but it goes over the kids’ heads.
When we went there were only two English speakers on our boat. I got the impression there was no other boat with English speakers, all the ones I saw seemed to be filled with Latinos. I felt a bit sorry for our two Americans, we were all laughing and bantering back but the entertainer did not have good enough English get the jokes to work for them. We tried to translate a bit.
The music was good but probably not that enjoyable for someone who is not into Latin or Mexican music. There is no dance performance, it is pure musicians playing music to get you up to dance or sing along. So this is not exactly a “typical Mexican” experience for a non-Mexican in my opinion. The Mexican nights in the hotels probably do it better.
Food: if you’re not one to eat much at night, it’s fine. The quality is not bad and I liked everything but the vast majority on our boat did not eat even half of the food. (Some went prepared and took food from the hotel to not go hungry.) General opinion: the idea of trying different Mexican dishes might seem good but reality is the that there are far too many different flavours that do not combine. Everyone would have much preferred a decent plate of fajitas or something. The hamburgers for the kids were good. I suggest getting hamburgers for more fussy adolescents too.
Drinks: not bad, rum and vodka are offered to those who did not like tequila. Beers were good too. Not many mixers. We ran out of several of our preferred soft drinks and beers before the end of the night. Lots of non-drinkers (adolescents, kids and also adults) in our group so that might have had something to do with it.
All in all: about half of our group of 19 liked it as an experience but would not repeat nor pay that kind of money again, small kids (3-8 yrs) and a couple of the adolescents were indifferent and a bit bored, a few of us would have loved it, had it not been for the heat (and would happily go again in winter), and a couple downright hated it because of lack of comfort and food.
The staff were great, we had a decent entertainer and I wish I could remember the name of our oarsman/skipper as he was amazing, he worked the hardest and was the life and soul of the party.

We appreciate the time you took to share your message with us. For Group Xcaret all our visitors are very important. It's really great to hear that the service of our team met your expectations, as we are committed to serving with joy in order to leave a positive mark on our visitors.
On the other hand, we are sorry to hear that your visit to our Mexican party didn't meet your expectations. You can rest assured that all your feedback will be sent to the relevant departments in order to keep innovating our experiences. It'd be great to have you back in this or at any other park of Grupo Xcaret, such as Xavage, and Xenotes in Cancun. Xel-Há, Xcaret, Xenses, Xplor and Xplor Fuego in the Riviera Maya. There is a different park for everyone, which can be adapted to your preferences.
Kind regards.

Aug 2023 • Family
I experienced this excursion two years ago and I loved it so much I wanted to undergo it another time and introduce it to a family member. Unfortunately, it was NOT the Xochimilco I underwent last time.
For some reason, only one mariachi band played and we had to endure two other smaller bands and a banda o tejano group. There were no different mariachi bands playing. That’s why I came to do the excursion! Very disappointed! I took so many videos of the different mariachi bands the last time I came but there was only one mariachi band playing and we went straight thru them!
Our guide Sigifredo and the navigator were great and kept us very entertained. Ely the driver was great! The food was delicious as always; except for the stale nachos and pork rinds. Lots of drinks available.
I just can’t get over the fact that all the different mariachi bands were non existent. I’ll never recommend this excursion to anyone else. Due to the lack of mariachi bands I consider this excursion overpriced!!!

We are planning on doing Xoximilco. We are staying at Xcaret and it says we get picked up at 3:20. Does anyone know why we get picked up so early if it's only a 45 minute trip? I'm curious as to how we are going to pass the time once we gat there.
Hello Meg,
Thank you so much for contacting us!
We'd like to comment to you that guests of the Xcaret Hotel have a preferential schedule to enter the park. We recommend contacting by email to Guest Service for further information or requests since they have a different logistics than the park.

We are planning on staying at Hotel Xcaret so Xoxomilco would be free to us. Our family does not drink. Would we still enjoy Xoxomilco?

Yes, you would be able to enjoy it any ways. There are mostly like little games that they do on the xoximilco, whoever loses usually get to drink a shot but if you don’t drink you have other options like dancing or grito mexicano. Yet there are many other things to enjoy there, like the music, the food, and the dessert.

Qué medidas están tomando, dado que las personas están muy cerca en las trajineras? Queremos ir pero nos preocupa la situación actual.

We are coming to stay at Secrets in Playa Mujeres in a couple of weeks. We’re interested in this trip for 6 adults. Is there transportation from our resort? Should we
Book ahead or wait until we get to the resort?

Hello, there is transportation from the Airport to the Hotel. However, I recommend you book a shuttle with your vacation package. They have a round trip option and they schedule a pick-up time and everything. It gives you peace of mind that it's safe, it's already taken care of and it's less expensive than getting a taxi right there and then.

Hi, we have started planning a trip to Cancun and would love to take grandma to Xoximilco gondola ride, however, she is in a wheel chair and she is able to walk but very little. Would she be able to ride?

Yes. They can wheel folks to the boats and help them in and get them situated. They will even wheel them out during the intermission.
