Self-guided historical view of a couple whose home has become a museum. This couple have contributed to the historical preservation of the Lacandon peoples through a lifetime of acquired language and skills from archeology to photography. Mapping and promoting the culture of the people of Chiapas and Guatemala were their lifelong goals. A lovely 10-20 min walk up the hill where their home (museum) makes for a good vista as well.

To delve deeper into Chiapas' indigenous past, in particular the history of the Lacandon people. A very atmospheric house a little bit off the beaten track. It seems the owners were pioneering environmentalists.

Very interesting museum and former archeologists' home. Great artifacts. Very few people. Located a little away from the city center, but only a 20 peso cab ride. Lovely shop with some of the best textiles...small scale. Have lunch there to support the organization.

There are several small museums in San Cristobal de las Casas and this is one of my favorites. I’ve been every time I visit the town and it’s always a pleasure. It’s on the edge of the historical center, but an easy walk. Yet it feels remote. The house was built as a seminary in the late 1800s (there’s even a small chapel) and the archeologist/photographer/anthropologist European couple occupied the space in the 1950s. The space and furnishings are lovely, and the place is so peaceful. There’s a sweet cafe and shop across the street, where you buy tickets.

We had hoped that the museum in this former seminary offer deep insights into the cultures of the indigenous peoples of the mountain villages. However, the displays focused more on the life and explorations of the founder, Blom, and his photographer wife. Her portraits of the Mayan people are worth a isit in themselves.

Try the chocolate caliente or the azteca soup. Simply delicious. You can eat theem by the fireplace on a rainy day, or outside among flowers in the sun.
