- ksufan88Wichita, Kansas6,589 contributionsDon’t miss the rooms with treasures from Monte AlbanAs you enter, you are required to check any larger bags and also bottles of water. The first floor is mainly the cloisters with most of the original paintings destroyed when the building was occupied by the military. There is a small temporary exhibit also on the first floor but most of the best things to see are upstairs. The rooms where the treasures from the archeological site of Monte Alban are displayed were amazing. Those areas have lots of signs in both Spanish and English and were very interesting. The remaining parts of the museum were mostly all described in Spanish only and covered the Spanish occupation of this area and then into more modern times.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- sisterbay716Chicago, Illinois427 contributionsMust See Stop in OaxacaHoused in a very extensive former convent, I found the building as interesting as the museum. Pausing in the silent courtyard it was easy to imagine monks walking the passageways on their way to chapel! The museum itself is spectacular. I had underestimated the amount of historical artifacts and antiquities that illustrate Oaxaca's past. Chief among these is the treasure that was unearthed at Monte Alban, but there much else to see, as well. Everything is very well maintained and presented.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 March 2024
- Nikki D59 contributionsMuseo de Culturas, OaxacaThe church was closed for a wedding, but ok advantage of the museum next door. Incredible architecture and contemporary exhibits. Explored the huge building and the top notch artifacts from Monte Alban area and the Tomb. Beautiful historic works. The building is an old convent and many, many rooms with beautiful views overlooking the botanical gardens below. Highly recommend. Allow a few hours to really explore all areas. And so happy to witness the wedding reception upon exiting the museum, so festive and colorful. Great area with many shops and restaurants as well.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 April 2024

This was an unexpected treat in our visit to Oaxaca. We hired a guide just outside the entrance to the museum and he certainly expanded our understanding of what we were seeing. For some reason, they translate monastery as "convent" in English, which makes one suppose that it was for nuns. But this was actually a monastery for Dominican Friars. It is huge and beautifully restored with very interesting exhibits throughout.

Even though i’m not usually an ardent museum fan , I spent over three hours here wandering through the many exhibits and enjoying the atmosphere and the beautiful architecture. The views from the windows upstairs are worth a visit in themselves. All in all, a wonderful experience and I would happily return again!

We heard that the museo de las culturas de Oaxaca had just reopened, so we took a chance and went there today (May18th) at about 1 pm to find that they reopened today. Admission was 85 pesos. A guide standing outside asked if we wanted a one hour tour. We said “yes” even though it was 600 pesos, or about 30 USD, because we know that to get the most out of our visit an English speaking guide was must. We were his first tour in more than 2 years! His name was ‘Em, and he was very knowledgeable about the artifacts in the museum as well as the building itself, which had been a Dominican friary and then an army barracks. We particularly like the library with its ancient books and manuscripts, as well as the beautiful treasures of Tomb 7.

This museum is very well laid out and has some interesting collections, some gold relics from Monte Alban in a separate room. The museum is very large and your ticket lasts all day. Have a rest and come back later when you are refreshed.

Located at the Zocolo there is a wealth of activity here. Before we went in there was a music event going on and vendors and street artists as well. The Museum is housed in the old monastery/nunnery with rooms arranged in chronological orser. Many nice art pieces and things of historical interest. The gold of Monte Alban is the most impressive, Gardens consist of cacti and local trees set out in a pleasing array. Sorry we did not have more time to spend. Many excellent restaurants surround the site. Don't miss the cathedral itself, very beautiful side chapels.

This is a vast museum, that is part of the central Cathedral complex. The building itself is very impressive and from it you get great views across the Cathedral square and into the botanic gardens. Numerous rooms of exhibitions but the star is the jewellery found in one of the tombs at the ancient Monte Albin archeological site. Interesting for either a short or long visit.

Definitely a recommend for museum lovers. This site, formerly a convent, now has several large and small rooms fllled with all sorts of pre-Columbian and Colonial art. The balcony views of the adjacent Ethnobotanical Gardens are pretty nice, too.

We toured the museum next to the church which is a converted monastery so interesting. The exhibits give a sort of history of Mexico but most info is in Spanish. It is a pity that they don’t offer the opportunity to buy audio guides or have some more signage in English to provide a richer experience for tourists. There was an exhibition of a tomb discovered in Monte Alban which was extremely interesting. It is amazing that pottery and stone carvings that are so intricate, sometimes fragile & have so many bits jutting out so they are easily snapped - remain intact. When we came out the church was open so we popped in for
a look.

This is a solid 2-hour experience you must do in Oaxaca, and do it first! Cell phone reception is excellent and I had downloaded Google Translate. With the camera option I just point at the Spanish text descriptions and instantly see the translation. Miracles of technology!

Wonderful museum. They are very artistic with arranging the exhibits, a very relaxing stroll through the artifacts and information. I always find books and CD's and lovely jewelry in their bookstore. Taking in their beautiful botanical garden out the tall arched openings on second floor is very meditative.

I bought tickets for a Sunday through TA and it says it’s a tour. There is no time for tour start. Has anyone done this? Does it mean that you can go anytime they are open that day?
Also, it says to pick the tickets up at the Viator office inside Hotel Quinta Real, but they are closed Sunday and we arrive too late Saturday to pick them up then.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help!

If possible, as long you still have time, usually 24 to 48 hours (I'm sure that the cancellation time is in your fine print) before your scheduled time, you can usually cancel. Then just buy your tickets at the entrance, you will have to leave everything you are carrying at the security entrance and they will store it for you, then you pick it up when your done, on the way out. They had no maps or brochures when we visited, you just walk through all the rooms at your own pace, and there are a lot of rooms. Enjoy

Hello. Several years ago I visited Oaxaca, Monte Alba. While there, a man sold two pieces of pottery to me that he said were very old. Since buying them, I felt very bad about having these two fairly small pottery heads and want to return them to Oaxaca. Can you message me an address to use to return them to Mexico? I would very much appreciate that! I hope to hear from you shortly. Katherine Taheri, Cartersville, GA, USA.

Not to worry Katherine, the relics you bought are not old. They are most likely good reproductions. The old gentlemen inside Monte Alban are authorized to sell souvenirs to tourists. So set out those pottery heads and enjoy your memory of Oaxaca

Was there in December 2017 and we paid an admission. I don't remember exactly what we paid for admission. If I recall correctly, it was around $50 Pesos +/-

Three ladies will be in Oaxaca from July 20-25. should they be making advance reservations for spa treatments?

I would say it depends on the level of service or services you seek....High end does not always mean a better service but it almost always means better skin products etc.
Any time around the Day of the Dead I would say it would be prudent to reserve everything you can from rooms to tours to services required.
