Rufino Tamayo was a great artist and he used the ancient Mayan and native Mexican and Guatemalan artisan work as inspiration for some of his own art. The museum houses a lovely collection of special pieces and has good description in English. The house has...More

This little museum has a stunning collection of ancient art from around the region. As others have noted, there is no English signage -- but most of the rooms have cards available with a translation, so look for those if you have a question. The...More

Signage is almost 100 percent Spanish (This is a museum in Mexico, after all.) but that does not detract at all from this excellent collection of Pre-Hispanic art. Even if you have been to the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, this collection has many new...More

This is a wonderful museum filled with ceramic antiquities. The building itself is nice as well. It really gives you an insight into the people of thousands of years ago and what went on in their lives through their sculpture/art. We bought one of the...More

On the day we visited, there was almost no one else there. So unlike a visit to a more famous museum, we were not bothered by tour groups taking selfies in front of the exhibits.

This is a rather small museum, which I might have been expecting to be bigger or have a more vast variety of pre-hispanic pieces, due its fame. The labels are in spanish only, which I can't complain as it is my mother language, but it...More

A very pleasant museum with some great pieces of historic art. Each room had a flyer in English with a brief description of each piece. Do not know how he did it but what a great collection.

This is a pleasant surprise. It contains pieces of pottery from 2000 BC. Zapotec, Olmec, Aztec, all from a private collection. Amazing! Sr. Tamayo was afraid that if he did not establish this museum, all of these artifacts may be lost to private collectors or...More

This museum is well-designed and includes an extensive collection of of prehispanic art. It definitely helps you to understand the rich cultural history of Mexico and the range of different types of artistic expression before the conquest. Definitely worth a visit.

Best museum in Oaxaca. A must see. This extensive, privately owned collection is impressive and beautiful. Nicely displayed in a great setting which has a lovely garden with places to sit. Don't miss this gem.
