We came from Los Angeles CA to Oaxaca and this market place was like no other when it comes to Oaxacan goods. In LA, and even Tijuana Baja CA, we would pay 10 times what we paid here. The people here also were open to negotiating and we got so many deals. All said abs done we spent about $2000 which we will take back and sell on offer up.

I was searching for embroidered fabrics... After pricing many different stores all over Oaxaca, on my last day, I returned to the Mercado de Artesanias because the merchant's prices were less expensive. It's a great place to find a beautiful selection of textiles and clothes and the prices are fair.

I live in Oaxaca and buy lots of things for myself, friends, etc., and one of my main sources is the Mercado de Artesania. Though one does have to be careful (sadly, it is true that many things supposedly handmade in Oaxaca are now being mass-produced in China and/or India, but most of those things are actually sold on the streets - perhaps more in the Benito Juarez market near the zocalo), it is not true that most things in the MdeA are foreign-produced. I know because I have be-friended several of the vendors, I am often there when the sellers come in from the villages with their clothing, and am also very familiar with what is authentic and what is not. There is even one shop/stall - 'Coyuchi' right in the center of that same market - that sells some of the most beautiful (and expensive) hand-woven, naturally-dyed huipiles in all of Oaxaca.
So, yes, be careful when buying things in Oaxaca, but don't believe that everything (or even most) in Mercado de Artesania comes from China; it's just not true.

The market has mostly clothing and other textiles and some alebrijes (carved wooden animals) but the quality isn't the highest and generally you are not buying directly from the artisans. If you have a chance to travel to the artisan villages you should do your shopping there. The quality and selection will be better and you will know that your money is going to the artisan. If you don't have the time or inclination to go to the different villages, you can shop at one of the nonprofit artisan groups in town - there are several. I really like the Casa de las Artesanias de Oaxaca on Mariano Matamoros and the Instituto Oaxaqueno de las Artes on Rufino Tamayo. These places, unlike the Mercado de Artesanias have only work from Oaxaca that is truly handcrafted by artisans. The Mercado has some stuff that is clearly machine made and imported. All that said, there are plenty of beautiful items at the Mercado and it is fine for when you just need to get something in a hurry.

I really enjoyed this market. We didn't know about it when we first arrived, it was only in our last few days of our trip that we found it as it's not by the main market. We had to ask directions a few times.
The hotel owner of the last place I stayed at suggested that I visit this artisan market since I was admiring some of her linens. She recommended that we go here. They have a lot of the same stuff as the other markets but I feel the selection is a bit wider. The prices are similar... you just have to know what things go for. I found higher quality linens here at the same prices as other vendors. I am coming back to Oaxaca in a few months and will come back here to stock up on some of my favorite items. Check it out!

Most of the other sites in town with the word "artisan" in the name are really just tourist trap sort of stores. This place, however, is different. It's a bit south of the heart of Oaxaca in a grittier, off the beaten path area. It's perfectly safe, though, and you can absolutely walk there from wherever you're staying.
Inside this warehouse-like building you'll find row upon row of small stalls where all sorts of local artisans are selling their goods. Textiles, shirts, a few rugs (mostly small ones -- nothing large), baskets, trinkets... most of what you'll see in the fancy shops up north can be found here for much cheaper, and you'll feel good knowing your money is going straight into the hands of the artisan responsible for your purchase.
I'm not giving five stars, though, because I didn't actually buy anything. The artisans were a little too aggressive for me who likes to browse and make decisions slowly. There were also so many offerings jam packed into such small spaces that I found it hard to hone in on the sorts of things I wanted. Still, it was an interesting and worthwhile experience.

This market used to have more than clothing and rugs but as of recent years there are just 2 or 3 other types of stalls here. The embroidered dresses are for the most part hand-done and in so many colors I eventually became overwhelmed. Good prices. Many rugs and hand-embroidered linens. One stall had women's beaded belts and bracelets, tiny beads woven into flowers and birds. The belt was $26. You'd probably pay over $100 in the states, way over. I suggest going through it once before you buy as oftentimes one vendor will have the dress in a color you might like better. Prices are pretty much the same from vendor to vendor.

As far as merchandise goes, it seems like this market has seen better days. Most of the stalls are pretty repetitive, and a lot of them seem to be closed often. It's rather sad. There are a couple interesting shops in the market if you are willing to take the time to look, and understand what you are looking for. You will see some stuff there that is machine woven, yes, but other people make it sound like the market is full of imported garbage, which is certainly not the case. It just doesn't have the selection that it probably used to at one point. There were a couple shops selling black pottery and alebrijes, but the selection in the villages is better. If you need a last minute thing though, you might find it here.
I'm surprised at how condescending some of the reviews are of this market, it's certainly not a "dump". Perhaps they should stick to shopping at "upmarket" stores because mercados in Mexico are clearly not for them, it's no different than any other typical market I've been to in regards to the state of it (in terms of cleanliness and the like). What makes it disappointing is the lack of variety. If you want a little handicraft to bring home and you don't have time to go to the villages, you may find it here. If you want a piece of art, stick to the galleries.

I visited this artisanal market after shopping in an artisanal street fair, several shops, and along thoroughfares in the city center. I particularly wanted table linens, a wool bag, and a wool vest for my husband, but they had everything you could find in any shop or fair. Lots of clothes and textiles!
I especially appreciated the fair prices, about two- thirds of anywhere else that I shopped. I did not ask to bargain because prices were so fair, but a couple of vendors offered me a lower price than they first quoted. I was not convinced that I wanted to spend 250 pesos for six placemats, for instance, but was willing to pay the 180 offered to me. I was nosy thrilled with the lovely tablecloth I bought for 350 pesos, about $20.
I also appreciated the lack of pressure, patience as I decided on a size, friendly merchants, consistent prices, and cooperation between vendors if I described what I wanted.
The market is indoors, an added delight on this rainy day. All in all, it was absolutely everything that I hoped for!!

If you’re a German backpacker or an elderhostel bus tripper, this might be for you. You can get the kind of tourist junk that is often made in China, bargain your heart out and think you had an authentic experience.
However, if you want actual crafts made by area craftsmen, there are much better places to go near the pedestrian zone. This is very far out of the way and many of the stalls time their opening to the timed arrival of tour busses.
Absolutely don’t bother. You can probably get better at a local flea market in the United States.
