The films of Emilio Fernández remind me of my childhood and summers passed with my Abuelita in El Paso...evenings spent under her loving watch as I fell asleep to El Indio's remarkable films. If you do not know who Emilio Fernández is, it's no fault of your own. Western filmmakers and distributors have long ignored the 'Golden Age of Mexican Cinema' and the exceptional pool of talent that defined this genre of classic Mexican films.
Emilio was—inarguably—one of the most interesting men in both the history cinema and Mexico. Like most of us that hail from what is now South Texas and Northern Mexico, he was a proud mestizo who could not help but be informed by both his Indigenous and Mexican heritage. Born in Coahuila—a state known for its rich indigenous heritage—he came of age alongside the dawn of Mexican cinema, right as the Mexican Revolution was reigniting and redefining what it meant to be 'Mexicano'. He was proud of his mixto heritage and this pride saturated every one of extraordinary films.
As a lover of his 'Cine de Oro' films, visiting Casa Fuerte was destination número uno on my first trip to Mexico City. I felt the warm presence of my beloved Abuela's spirit when visiting Emilio's gorgeous home. I'm very much a 'pocha' but attempted to soak in everything detailed in the Spanish language tour, but am certain somethings were lost in my rudimentary, internal translation. If you too are a pocha, do not expect tours in English. As his incredible film canon has yet to be restored, translated and marketed to an English-speaking audience, there isn't much of an American tourism market for tours of his home.
If you think I gave too much away in this video, believe me when I type—I did not. His home needs to be toured in order to truly soak in its majesty.
Visit the home's Facebook page to plan your visit. The site has extremely limited hours. If possible, it seems the best time to visit is around Día de los Muertos. Casa Fuerte del 'Indio', aka 'La Casa Fortaleza', is alternately marketed as 'Monumental Casa de Emilio EL INDIO Fernández'.

We visited Casa Fuerte without knowing much about Emilio Fernandez and it was a nice diversion on for a Saturday morning. The Casa opens at 12 and entry is 70 pesos each. You can have a guided tour but we opted to wander the house ourselves. It is a large Casa made from volcanic rock and an intriguing layout with winding staircases and large terraces. There is an original and authentic Mexican kitchen, lounge with photos and Mexican artefacts and we enjoyed our visit. It doesn't take too long to tour the house.
There could be more information available to describe the rooms and the history, but if you had the guided tour I expect you'd find out more.
