Affordable place to enjoy Xochimilco (far away better than the Nativitas harbour). The food is delicious and very cheap. You can enjoy music, handcrafts and more while you're enjoying the landscape and navigation. The best, prices are fixed,so you don't have to deal or negotiate.

We enjoyed our 2-hour boat ride to the Isla de Las Muñecas. Be sure to go on a week day as there are many boats and I can only imagine the traffic jam on a busy weekend. The scenery is unspoiled with many flowers, birds and lily pads. The island with the dolls is creepy but interesting. Read up on the legend as to why they are there and don't bring small children. All in all, this is an experience worth doing.

Cuemanco is alike Xochimilco. You can travel by those special boats named "trajineras" and listen to music, sing, dance and eat while navigating by its canals. But it is not as crowded as Xochimilco which I realy loved. Besides you can visit and see a particular amphibian animal (not a salamander not a fish). It is the axólotl (ajolote, the smiling an walking creature) that lives and grows only in that particular environment.,

Good place to escape the noisy Mexico city and go for a family walk. Not a lot of activities inside, just a nice green area.

Xochimilco, the remains from the prehispanic lakes in the Aztec capital, lies about 16 km (10 miles) Southeast from Mexico-City’s downtown.
The floating gardens, in the southern part of Xochimilco, are the traditional tourist attraction.
Less known is the newer area around Cuemanco.
At the end of the Periférico “beltway”, in the western part of Xochimilco one can visit the Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Course (Pista Olímpica de Remo y Canotaje Virgilio Uribe). Built for the 1968 Olympic Games, it is a closed, artificial basin 2.25 km (1.4 miles) long and 125 m (137 yards) wide.
My wife –a former Olympian kayaker- and myself like to walk along the course; fresh air, a good view of the Ajusco mountain (4000 m, 13100 ft) and -on clear days- of the snow-capped Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl (about 5400 m, 17800 ft) make you forget the pollution and other urban problems of the surrounding metropolitan area..
Next to the Olympic course is Cuemanco, an old adjacent canal that is the entrance to the natural bird protection reserve. It can be enjoyed taking a tour with a traditional pole-pushed boat (trajinera).
Close by, further East, is the relatively new Parque Ecológico, where families enjoy a picnic, safe bicycle paths and boat tours in the lake waters connected to Cuemanco and surrounding channels.
How to get there?
Drive the Periférico south-bound, past the PERISUR mall, past the Aztec Stadium and exit at Cuemanco, at the end of the speedway.
By public transport –not necessarily recommended for tourists- ask about buses or public vans (microbuses) that take the Periférico as far as Cuemanco.
