Mummies and a cloister! The mummies were refreshed at some point, and now they’re easier to see, but the lighting is tricky. The cloister’s bed used to be a wooden cot with a log pillow, so the thin mattress and proper pillow make monastic life look less austere. I’m still not signing up!

This is a tipical and somehow outstanding place in Mexico City. Once in a rural town, San Ángel, this convent is very well conserved and quite interesting.

This old convent we just happened and were very pleasantly surprised. There are some incredible works of art here and a really cool crypt, aqueduct and architecture. Well worth the visit

After having an excellent breakfast in the restaurant Carlota, we just crossed the street to enter to the Museo del Carmen. It was a really nice surprise to find such a nice and well preserved place. Besides its religious treasures, in the basement there is a beautiful area, which walls are covered by Mexican Talavera and where several mummies rest in peace since it became a museum. Their good preservation conditions is amazing. It is a short but nice visit around the many activities in San Angel. Highly recommended. The church is fine too.

San Angel 'hood is a must when visiting Mexico City and once there I recommend to pay a short visit to the Convento del Carmen, an old monastery now hosting a museum. It is a colonial building with tiles, paintings and everything you would expect but the highlight is the set of mummies very well preserved, maybe quirky but definitely un-conventional and interesting.

The church is a beautiful example of colonial baroque, with some interesting and unusual details: tiles, while and blue painting, a decorated vault, beside the more usual golden altars. I found exceptional the severe courtyard, which you enter from the very busy Alvaro Obregon Ave. It is behind a wall, and you distinguish its big cupolas from the outside. It also has a museum of sacred art, which unfortunately was closed when we visited.

It's a gem in the middle of the city, after restoration it's very comfortable, it has lot of information and history. It's bigger that you think at first instance. I loved it.

Strolling around the rooms and patios of this big convent, founded as Sant Angelo school in the early XVII century by "Discalced" Carmelite friars, you can have an idea of the power that this monastic institution would have in those days, owning several square kilometers around the convent that can be seen today... it even gave the name to the whole area surrounding the school (San Angel). In architectural terms the domes are really beautiful, as is the quiet garden secluded in between the heavy-traffic avenues of Insurgentes and Revolución. There are also some interesting NovoHispanic paintings and a curious collection of wax sculptures of indigenous characters. Ah, of course, there are some mummies in the underground of the convent, not a view for everyone's taste.

Visited the museum prior to the Bazar del Sábado (Saturday Bazaar in San Angel), it is worth the visit. They have mummies (like the ones in Guanajuato), aqueduct, convent and churches. Allow 1 hour. Interesting!

When visiting San Ángel, a stop at the Ex-Convento del Carmen merits a visit. Admission is $52MEX or just a bit under $4US. Although austere, the ex-convent does give one a feel for the religious life that once took place there. One can only imagine the hours spent in cubical-like rooms with only minimal furnishings. A significant number of religious paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are showcased on the convent walls. However, most impressive are the mummies that are located in the lower level of the ex-convent. I'm certainly not an expert on mummies, but the extraordinary conditions that preserved these bodies seems to capture these individuals in time. Although a bit macabre, my grandchildren would have been fascinated by seeing "real" mummies as opposed to those portrayed in the modern cinema. One can also see where the nuns could hear the church service or choir without leaving the walls of their personal sanctuary. Although the repainted hallways and rooms probably don't represent the more removed life nuns lived there, one can still get a sense of the simplicity of their lives where most worldly possessions were left at the front door. After coming up the hill from La Bombilla Metrobus stop, the Ex-Convento del Carmel is a great first stop for a very full day in San Ángel.
