Going from Mexico City to Teotihuacan we stopped to see the Basilica of Guadalupe by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez which, in addition to being the most visited Marian sanctuary in the world, is also an interesting piece of architecture. The ancient basilica also overlooks the square but was unsafe due to subsidence problems and is under restoration but still closed to internal visits. To see the relic there is a moving walkway behind the altar so you can't stop there.

    Sacred site worth visiting
I was raised Catholic but no longer practice. Still you needn't be religious to find that this site is worth the trip and an hour or two of your time. It's really a huge complex. The new basilica houses the image of the virgin, which is located behind the altar. Visit all of the churches/chapels to get the complete picture and to enjoy the views of the city.

    Beautiful and Uplifting Experience
We were nine family members, visiting the Basilica, including young children, teens and grandparents. We all loved it. Parking was easy in the garage. As soon as we arrived Mass was being celebrated so we took the opportunity to participate (Mass is celebrated every half hour). It was so very moving to celebrate Mass in front of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Once Mass ended we went and rode the moving platform underneath the image that allows one to see the image closer. We then spent too much time in the gift shop that’s in the lower rear of the Basilica. The shop is very crowed. You are better off going to one of the other official stores located on the grounds of the Basilica because there will be less crowded. Finally we, without the grandparents, climbed to the top of the hill where one of the original churches that housed the image of Our Lady is located. The view was beautiful as are the gardens and statues on the way up and down. Don’t miss them! Seeing Our Lady of Guadalupe in person is a beautiful, moving and uplifting experience.

A must stop for any and all Christians.
It is a pilgrimage for Catholics and a testimony for the unbelievers. You will see the evidence of the actual miracle,… for the faithful. For skeptics, may be it is time to reconsider and explore the history and revisit the knowledge. Read about the miracle and the importance of this basilica, before your visit especially if you are not accompanied by a reputable tour guide.

La Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe
Beautiful Church to visit upon your arrival to Mexico City. They have shops outside the church and little restaurants to eat from. You don’t see the time flying by when walking around and enjoying the scenery.

A Spiritual Uplifting Place Surounded by History...
This is a special Basilica demonstrating the history of the conversion of native American people to the Christian Faith. There are hundreds of years of religous art and architecture here. This is a top 5 pilgramige site for Catholics. Like all Chistian Churches it is open to all and free of charge. It is best to begin at the La Villa Subway station for a nice view of the enterance. The day long journey and walking includes the Basilica, the Blessing Station, hourly services, the Baptistry, 6 large historic Chapels, a Convent, the hill climb to the spring, 1000's religous paintings and bronzes, two museums, the fountains procession, the garden, the story telling clock tower and the miracle reveal. The outwall has the Jesus's stations of the cross like Jerusalem in the Holyland.

    "Monumental Church"
The Basilica dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, impresses by its circular architecture, has a modern style. It is the most visited Marian enclosure in the world. Inside are walls full of artistic works. It is a Catholic venue that impresses!!

    Historical Breathtaking Catholic Crowded
Great! Peaceful! Magestic! And very congested with tourists! We came here on an Uber ride, no need for a tour guide. Don’t forget, this is a church that does hold regular mass. It still requires visitors to practice respect toward the Catholic faith. This is a large property with two churches and the hill of Tepeyac. Make sure to take your time and stop and visit everything. Don’t feel intimidated with the stairs leading to El Cerro de Tepeyac, where Juan Diego saw the virgin mother. Once you get there, they have a souvenir section, a cemetery, which I didn’t get to see due to it being closed. You will also visit a small chapel. The chapel is where Virgin Mary tilma used to be. You’ll find a souvenir shop and some street food vendors. From there, you can also take in a spectacular view of the city. Definitely well worth the short 15 minutes of steps up. The historic old chapel is also worth seeing, as it is gradually sinking. Its architecture is breathtaking.

    Fantastic and exciting!
I would say this is a complex of churches, gardens and some monuments. The oldest cathedral is the one on top, which has a charming beauty. From there, you have an excellent view of the city. It is said that this is where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared. The Capilla del Pocito is a temple that was built around a well that was said to contain miraculous water. Around this building is cracked and the land is ceding due to instability. As we were informed, this happens with various buildings in the city. Even the larger basilica is pie for the same reason; it is beautiful and it seems that no more Mass is celebrated in it. There's a museum, but I haven't visited. The newest cathedral is also pretty. There's a very interesting astronomical clock in the complex. To visit, nothing is paid (except for the museum that I can't inform). I recommend at least 1 hour and a half to visit. It has religious goods stores near the larger basilica, as well as several stores next to the higher church.

Located north of Mexico City, the site houses several chapels, the basilica built in the 18th century but which sinks into the ground and the new basilica built in the mid-1970s. From the forecourt of Capilla del Cerrito built on top of a hill on the exact spot of the apparition, one has a beautiful view of a part of Mexico City. In the new basilica, a treadmill is used that passes in front of the relic (tunic by Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, where the image of the Virgin Mary is said to have been printed after her appearance). Even without religious feelings, one can only be surprised by the fervor aroused by the Virgin of Guadalupe. The annual pilgrimage (December) attracts more than 11 million people each year. Free entry. To see

We came here as part of our tour. The Basilica itself it rather new and built to hold a large congregation, hence, does not have the grandger of old churchs. I think this place has more meaning for those who are religious. There is a moving sideway that goes under the hung image of the virgin cloak.

Beautiful visit with 3 churches. We were only able to visit 2/3 because the third oldest church gate was locked at 6pm. There where fascinating chandeliers at the newer church, spacious meditative space, but opposite style compared to the original cathedral. Lots of foot traffic makes it a bit harder to contemplate. We came late in the day so were unable to grasp the full beauty of this place. For devout Christians, this could be even more magical and enlightening. It was surprising to see the cracks in the ceiling of the old church and from outside the lean of the building. Worth a stop on the way back from Teotihuacan pyramids if you’re able to do that.

Go and see this church...entrance is free. (costs 20 pesos to see the sacristy with it's fab. paintings.) The choir area may also cost a few pesos..it was closed when we were there. Get a real feel for the purpose of the building by attending the 12 o'clock Sunday mass celebrated by the archbishop. You can also hear the huge organ. The gilt high alter is mesmerising.

Having drifted away from being a part of any organized religion, I really had no intention of visiting the Basilica. However, we stopped here as part of a tour to Teotihuacan and I'm really glad we did. The history of the Basilica which includes both the current modern building and the more historic churches that are all a part of the same complex is quite fascinating. The story of Guadelupe is also an integral part of Mexican history and identity making this an important part of a visit to Mexico City. Seeing those here not as tourists but making a true pilgrimage to this sacred site was quite moving.

This place is so impressive. We got there at 730 am and was already a crowd building but we were able to walk about and see most before it got so crowded.. Make sure you take the time to walk to the top of the hill to the smaller church. It is a beautiful view and has great prices on souvenirs. Its a climb but worth it. Just take your time. The grounds are beautifully manicured. Everyone was so friendly. So glad we visited. (the Guadalupe "cloth" is inside below and behind the alter where Priests stand. There is a moving sidewalk so you can see it. The story behind it is a little whimiscal but "to each his own" beliefs. It is very pretty though.

The importance of this place for a Catholic is hard to put into words. Seeing in person the location where Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego was a spiritual experience. The organization of the Basilica is to be commended. Pilgrims can see the Tilma of Juan Diego via a moving walkway under the main altar, without disturbing the Mass and worship from the main space in the church. We marveled at the sight of the Tilma many times in our visit. Also on the site is the original Basilica, which is now closed due to safety concerns, but still marvelous to view on the outside. The main square is a large gathering space, that reminds me of St. Peter's square in Rome. Not to missed is the hike to the top of Tepeyac Hill, where the apparition of Mary to Juan Diego occurred. There is a church at the top, where one will find amazing views of the Basilica complex and Mexico City.

This place is a treasure, so happy we got to see it in person.

Incredible sight to see. This is a very important pilgrimage destination which changed the course of history in Mexico. Loved the Mass at the Basilica, which is pretty much every hour, climbing the hill at Tepeyac and the chapels. Most importantly I’ve always wanted to see the Tilma. The Blessed Mother imprinted the iconic image of herself on Juan Diego’s tilma in 1531 - and it miraculously still exists today. So happy to have seen it and all the sights here. What a great sight to see in Mexico City.

They do not hand out maps- so take a photo of the tourist map in the glass case as you enter so you can find your way around!

Walking in this basilica is like entering a carnival funhouse. Your eyes tell you to stand straight up but when you do it gravity makes you start falling over. Probably the only old Cathedral in the world where you can experience this strange feeling because of the sloped floor---the whole cathedral is sinking toward its front portal.

The effect is the same in the attached Museum, kept losing my balance on the stairs because my eyes thought they were vertical

I highly recommend visiting this Basilica. There are masses at least 5 times a day and there is so much to see that it is best to spend more than one day there if possible. I recommend you wear comfortable shoes if you want to see most of the cathedrals and exhibits.

The Basilica de Guadalupe as a wonderful, historical religious experience to see when in Mexico City. The whole property is very large and there’s lots of walking and lots to see. We spent the whole day here. The cloak of the Virgin Mary is displayed along a people mover so you can get up close views. Very spiritual. Try and see the show the large clock on the property puts on at certain hours. It’s very entertaining.

We came and visited on our own, we had no tour guide and had no problem seeing and understanding everything. There’s lots of vendors outside the property so choose your souvenirs wisely as there’s many choices. There’s lots of restaurants including some fast food joints to choose from outside the property if your hungry after visiting. A must see!
