The area
Neighbourhood: Coyoacán
Once you step into Coyoacán (“Land of the Coyotes”) you'll find picturesque parks and cantinas that will transport you back to the colonial era thanks to the brick and stone details of the area. Iconic writers such as Trotsky and great painters like Frida Kahlo seeked refuge and inspiration in this area, and you can see the unique spirit of this neighborhood reflected in its colorful market where nieves, sopes and all kinds of traditional 'antojitos' are a must try. Restaurants and cafés throughout its peaceful paved streets contain traditional but unique murals and decorations, where one can enjoy a mezcal at noon or the best churros with a cup of coffee.

We spent Saturday morning in Coyoacan and the afternoon in San Angel. Both were charming, especially on a Saturday. To get to San Angel from Coyoacan we walked along Fransicso Sosa which did change names a couple of times as it got close to San Angel. The street and neighbornood was filled with homes that were very nice and looked like they had been originally built in colonial times. Lovely. As we walked along we sound a cultural center and went inside, not knowing if was only for members and found a really lovely place. People were learning how to dance, paint, and more. It looked like food was offered there at times and the center was filled with a lovely park with lots of vegetation.
Although the walk along this street was quite long we loved it. The large fancy homes and parks made it a pleasure.

Francisco Sosa avenue is a pretty street lined with single or double storey colonial homes that recall the times when the district was a city. Some of the buildings are quite historic and go back to the 17th century. The street is narrow and lined with trees, with narrow sidewalks that are in need of repair in many places. It is charming, however. The buildings are colorful and the neighborhood is quiet compared with most places in Mexico City. There are a number of restaurants along the street, there is also a small charming plaza and a church. Nice street to stroll on in the morning.

I happened upon this street by chance in my efforts to find the Casa Azul. It is a beautiful, quiet street. The houses have colorful, old-time designs. Taking this street will lead you to the beautiful Colonia Coyoacan. It has a wonderful, small-town feel to it. It is a peaceful, beautiful walk.

Our guidebook recommended the walk along Avenida Francisco Rosa from Coyoacan to San Angel. Don't do it! It's a long walk. Both Coyoacan and San Angel are worth a visit but take a cheap taxi ride in between.

I walked the entire length of the street on my own after visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum. The architecture is colorful, manicured + charming. Beautiful painted address tiles and signage. Fruit carts on the street to eat as you walk. Nice cafes and park. This street has a charming old world Mexico vibe!

All Coyoacan area is awesome and architecture is great. The central plaza is within a walking distance. Colonial style is preserved in all the area with ancient houses, all well preserved.

A great way to discover Coyoacan is to take this avenue West to East and then sit at a cafe on the main plaza. This is one of the oldest colonial street in Latin America, don't miss it if you go to San Angel or Coyoacan, it is just in between.

It was a long but pleasant walk. We stopped to see Fonoteca Nacional and the walk itself was pleasant and nice because of the little restaurants /coffee places that are on the way.

Coyoacan's historic center and nearby neighborhoods are filled with homes built from the colonia era to the middle of the 20th century, many of which have been catalogued for their historic value. Many of these homes can be found on two of the historic center’s oldest streets: Higuera and Francisco Sosa. One of the most important of these structures is the Casa de Ordaz, located on Calle Francisco Sosa on the corner with the Plaza de Centenario. It was long thought to have belonged to conquistador Diego de Ordaz, who died in 1532, but research has shown that it was built sometime in the 18th century. The walk along Francisco Sosa Avenue is not only full of historic homes, but also of beautiful big trees and vegetation. As a plus, there is no much vehicular traffic. You may see a musician playing on the street, or a fresh fruit vendor.

We walked from the Mercado Sabado in San Angel along Francisco Sosa all the way to Coyoacan. My favorite day in Mexico City!
