The tourist trap of Xochimilco didn't appeal to us. So we arranged a private guide who arranged Kayaks for us. We had the option of a sun rise or later in the morning. We opted for later in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Our guide met us in town and guided us through a maze of alleys, to a skiff (a flat boat that they use a long pole to move and maneuver in the narrow canals). The area is not clean and lots of garbage in the water.

We visited a local restaurant for coffee and also a few places that grew vegetables.

Eventually, we got to the Kayaks and paddled through the canals, with some information from our guide to the main part of the canal, past the island of the dolls.

The drive from Mexico City to Xochimilco is long and slow. About 1.5 hrs each way.

It was neat to see it the canals, which was what Mexico City was originally and learn some of the history.

From what I have seen, don't do the tourist tours. Find a local guide and do you own excursion. I recommend the Kayaks.

Worst show ever. Waste of time and money. You can hardly see or hear anything. They oversale their shows.

Do not go by any circumstance, do not even try it, there are so many other places to spend your money and time. I'm mexican, born and raised in Mexico City, my wife and son wanted to go since we went to Xoximilco in Riviera Maya (Xcaret gorup) a few years ago and got a super nice experience there and wanted to try the original Xochimilco in Mexico city. But this is just a place to get pranked. We did a reservation with Las Flores Nativitas embarcadero web page, it seem to be a good deal since we booked a 4 hour (ajolotario Tour) ride worth 2,400 pesos at a 1,800 pesos special rate, I payed through paypal to make sure we did not got robbed. Communication with Carlos Diaz was good and he gave us the instructions to arrive. I asked him if we needed to pay parking and he replied no parking fee was required, but once you arrived there, we found several guys asking for 50 pesos for a parking spot, when told this to Carlos, he just replied, "it is ok, pay the 50 pesos to them". On the way to Xochimilco a few miles before arrival there are several guys who will come to you on the stop lights arriving by either bike or motorcycle to tell you they have better deals and are "autorized" tourist guides, even wearing some "tourist guide" vests... do not go with any of them, period. Once we arrived we have to pay for every visit to the toilet from 5 to 15 pesos. The trajinera we got had no name in front, when we asked our guide Axel to get a name for our trajinera he just got mad, cause he wanted to depart right away, after 10 minutes, no one came to get the name, and we just decided to start the tour. During the whole trip we got hit and our guide hit several trajineras, at least 15 times and in more than one of those impacts the drinks and food we had on the table were all over the place after several hits. Our Trajinera driver gave us Zero background or history about the place, we had to ask him and he would just replied the very basic things. The tour on the web page stated the ride included a visit to the ajolete Museum... expect only a backyard of a house where they have a few snakes and ajolotes on fish tanks, although the guy giving the explanations seem to be a guy with knowledge and background. The tour also mentioned it included a visit to the chinampas, but when we asked our guide Axel if we would visit the chinampas, he said it was not possible to visit them, since they were private property. We noticed also that every time we stopped on a spot (to buy anything) Axel got paid by the owners of the place, so the stops were all planned according to where he would get money.
We bought some food and some plants as well as some Mariachi songs, (220 pesos each), so we spend easily 3,500 pesos for the whole trip, plus the food and drinks we brought from home.
Talking about the canals, they seem to get sewage from the homes close to them, full of trash and even dead rats, when crossing the bridge to the ecological area, the smells were terrible. Very disappointed from the whole experience, I would not come back even if they pay me. It is a shame the tourism entities do not pay a visit to these places and take action to improve, my mom told me she visited the place back in the 70's and was disappointed back then, she though after more than 40 years the place could have improved, but this is not the case. Our disappointment was even bigger after comparing to Xoximilco in Cancun, not to mentioned we have had the experience to visit Venezia and Giethoorn in Netherlands, go somewhere else in Mexico city, never visit Xochimilco.

Total B.S the whole thing is a tourist trap. Felt incredibly sketchy the whole time, our gondola driver was constantly on the phone to his mates, the food vendors charged us 1000 peso for 6 tacos.
The driver also tried to flog us an extra 20 mins on the boat for an extra 800 peso...but it had to be cash and not to tell the organiser. Absolute flogger.
But the bigger picture is that the area is borderline a favela and you will be ripped off at any opportunity. It does not seem genuine and wasn’t all that interesting.

Xochimilco is what remains of the floating gardens and lakes of precolumbian times that were promptly destroyed by the conquistadores. It is fun and sad all at the same time. We took an "ecological tour", which means we spent about 3.5 hours and went through a lock to get to more areas. Expect to pay a lot (this was the most we spent on our entire vacation) to see a world heritage site before it disappears. Food, beverages, flowers, marachis, stops to see endangered animal rescue (axolotl), or the island of the dolls, etc. are all extra. It was a wonderful time. I did find myself wishing we had booked a tour ahead of time.

The place is not nice. Is full of garbage, smell of QC, smell of food and people that are trying to sell boat rides at an exagerate price : 500mxn/pp/2 hours. We renounced at going with a boat and preferred to come back in the city.

Our driver, David, was a found of knowledge and ideas so he was the ideal guide for our canal ride. He explained the park, the canals past and present, and more about Mexico City culture.

We visited this place and we really fell in love with it, people see that you’re not from Mexico City and they always try to take advantage of you and have a higher price, you need to go with someone from Mexico to negotiate the price any of you can do it you are going to have a great experience.

We went there with no expectations and when we arrived we were a little shocked at the conditions. We paid 40 pesos and sed for a map and were told we could get one in the museum area. When we went in there were people sitting behind some desks and they ignored us. We spoke up and they offered us a map for 10 pesos and we bought the map. We then proceeded to the park and everything looked like it had been neglected, the benches were dilapidated and the kids park had weeds growing over the swings. All of the paths were wrong compared to the map and many of the paths were overgrown with weeds that were 2 feet tall. I can say that I love the outdoors but none of the exhibits or gardens had any signs of life. I feel bad for the people of mexico because it must have been beautiful 10 or 20 years ago but the government gave up on it and so now should the tourists.

Xochimilco was one of the stops and enjoy the boat ride ... classic of the place !!.... But .... this place is filthy... and there are no Prices control of rides and vendors .... to tourist that take advantage of visitors and charge a lot for a simple order of tacos $ 12 dollars (4 tacos ) that we refused and argued with him ... Is a reap off !!!! Totally disappointed with this place
