A great first place to visit on a walk around the historical downtown district. There's a tourist information booth just inside the doorway on the right - pick up a map and some advice - then go into the beautiful courtyard and head up the stairs to the right. The Orozco mural is mindboggling - even if you don't like the artist's style, be amazed at the scale and how difficult it must have been to paint on the high curved ceilings.

On the upper level head into the door marked "Congreso" to see where the Jalisco congress sits. Again, amazing Orozco murals to be seen. A local told us (after we'd visited) that there are some strange visual effects if one looks at the mural whilst walking through the curved chamber.

Whenever I have visitors we always go to the Palacio de Gobierno to see where Mexican history was made and to see the wonderful Orozco mural of Hidalgo freeing Mexico from Spanish rule. This historic seventeenth century building is still being used for the purpose for which it was designed and constructed. Visitors are allowed free entrance . . . you can sometimes get an English explanation of the wonderful mural, depends on if a "guide" is available or, you can admire the Orozco mural and figure out much of the symbolism. This building is where Hidalgo, the Father of Mexican Independence, signed the proclomation freeing all Mexican from slavery . . . 60 years before the US freed slaves. This is the building where Jalisco was goverened from for several hundred years and still today it is a functioning State of Jalisco office building with a wonderful courtyard. . . Oh, be sure to pay attention to the bullet hole in the clock that faces the plaza . . . supposedly Pancho Villa shot the clock.
PS: Free and clean restrooms in the building

"Palacio de Gobierno" has plenty of architectural jewels, sculptures, and paintings, and two amazing murals from Jose Clemente Orozco, which inspire liberty and human equality to the world. Jose Clemente Orozco also created other murals in the "Hospicio Cabanas", within walking distance from the "Palacio de Gobierno". The first mural is at the end of the stairs leading to the second floor, and the second mural is within the "Old Congress" room on the second floor. I highly recommend to get a tour for the murals, to truly extract the meaning and perspective (a different view of the paintings from different physical locations) for the paintings. There are no ticket charges for the site visit, but there are military guards at the entrance who require everyone to register before coming in.

It is no secret that Guadalajara has very beautiful spaces. This is one of them. The architecture is colonial and very worth a visit. What stands out are the mural paintings inside.

I didn't need to spend too long in this building, but it was well worth the visit just to see the beautiful architecture and the José Clemente Orozco murals. He's one of Mexico's most famous painters, so it's a part of history that I had witness, considering I had walked by the building so many times before. I would go back just for the fresco of Hidalgo in the stairwell alone! It was really amazing.

We visited the Palacio de Gobierno after viewing the Orozco murals at the Hospicio Cabanas. Entrance is free to this attraction. Although there are guards at the front of the building, they won't discourage you from entering and you can walk right past. The giant mural of Mexican Revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo just up the stairs on your right, is not to be missed. Be sure to take the time to view and appreciate the mural from all sides, as perspective is a key element in this, and other Orozco paintings. There is a second large mural up the stairs within a separate room. Be sure to look for it. We encountered an unusual tour guide sitting on the steps by the name of Xiao Lin, who offered a colourful and amusing perspective of the murals. He speaks 8 languages (!) and is more than happy to give short tours to tourists for a few pesos.

This place, for the stories it tells, would be worthy of a handsome entrance fee, but it's completely free. The two enormous murals that depict the end of slavery in 1810 are something to behold. The staff here are very nice. You will not waste your time coming to see this wonderful building and learning something about Mexico's past.

You can visit an authentic building, where you can see where the Governor works, but also, the Murals by Orozco are incredible. If you visit downtown Guadalajara DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE.

The palace doesn't stand out so much in the city center, since there are many beautiful buildings around, but it's still worth checking out. More importantly, it's absolutely worth going in and looking at the two murals inside. One of them is truly impressive in its size and quality. I recommend you find a guide to explain to you all the intricacies of the mural, because there's a lot to see an learn from it. It's truly amazing, and teaches a lot of Mexican and world history simultaneously.
