- MRE555Vancouver, Canada57 contributionsThe best and most charming viewpointNot to be missed. Interesting 10 minute historical film. Fabulous funicular and a lovely location to walk around to admire the wildlife and the expansive views in all directions. Lovely bar at the top. The definitive place to watch the sunset.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 December 2023
- LanceWest Kelowna, Canada49 contributionsReally unique. What a great place to visit for a few hours. Love the bird sanctuary. The parrots land on your head, so be alert. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive in every aspect, and really seem to love their job. Can’t wait to visit next year when the whale museum is open.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 January 2024
- Dorothy H5 contributionsHistorical information about Mazatlan in a beautiful setting. The Observatorio is definitely worth a visit. The ocean views are wonderful. The history, pictures and artifacts were very interesting. The aviary is a must see. Everything was clean and well cared for. You have to take the funicular to get there. It's a fun ride and gives you a good view of the coastline. Know before you go - the bus drops you off at the bottom of the hill. It's a fairly steep walk to get to the entrance.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 February 2024
- 573dk9999Iowa City, Iowa627 contributionsNice vantage point to see the cityA little research ahead of time showed that this was not an astronomical observatory, which probably disappointed a lot of eclipse viewers. It is a nice spot with several somewhat disjointed activities available, from antique furnishings and birds to iguanas and tequila stills. Worth an afternoon to ride up the funicular, to see the activities, and have a drink in the observation bar.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2024
- Jill MMiami, Florida7 contributionsReservation neededWe arrived about 4:45 pm. They told us the observatory was closed. We needed a reservation for the sky bar which we didn’t have. If we were willing to sit with other people they could fit us in. We went. View and sunset was excellent. There was a lot of extra space. Prices for drinks were high as expected. Service was pretty good.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2024

Family of 4 from Seattle, WA. Young female tour guide was bilingual and spoke to Mexican people and Americans separately. We were there 1 hour and had a good time. My kids liked the bird tour. My wife and I liked the view. Worth the $23 fee per adult and 1 hour of time.

Visited with family and friends on a beautiful clear afternoon. We planned our trip to take in the sunset and booked tickets. That process was a little bit clunky having difficulty online, but managed to direct message someone to get tickets. To start the ride up on the Fontenac was easy slow not scary at all. Arriving at the top, we experienced a bird sanctuary of parrots and parakeets which we fed. They land on your head or arm to eat the provided nuts. It also included iguanas and deer. There’s a lovely cactus garden overlooking the ocean. Inside the fort is completely remodeled like a home with period appropriate appointments, sprawling gardens, flora and fauna everywhere. After our tour we enjoyed a cocktail on the veranda, while the sun set and the cruise lines departed as we enjoy music. The tour guide, and all of the staff were friendly and professional, and did a fabulous job.

My husband and I had a great experience visiting the observatory in Mazatlán. We appreciated learning the history of the city where my husband grew up and our tour guide Andrea was phenomenal. Andrea was friendly, informative, and open to the questions she had. We loved the views of the city, ocean and El Faro. When we were done we were led to a bar area where we enjoyed some drinks and a delicious guacamole. Next time we visit Mazatlan, we will treat my husbands family who are locals to this great location. The one thing I would like to see improved was a way to summon the elevator from the top when we are ready to head down. We had to wait in the heat for over 10 minutes because we the elevator was parked at the bottom and nobody heard us. Fortunately a worker spotted us and called the elevator staff to come get us. Aside from that, we experienced great service and atmosphere. Will happily return.

A visit to the new Observatorio 1873 Mazatlan was a world class visit to 1873 Mazatlan, with modern support, making tourism easy. Located on a hill close to El Faro light house the Observatorio was built from a combination 1873 military foundation and a residence.
Entering from the ocean road, we watched a 15-minute animated video of the history of Mazatlan, A tram takes visitors up the side of the hill to a beautifully landscaped park. We walked into a caged area where many species of beautiful birds live and interact with visitors. e stood near the ramparts of the military formation that enclosed many species of native Agave plants.
We were taken back to time to a typical home of the 19th century Mazatlan with well kept furnishings. We reached the top of the observatory where there was a snack bar with snacks and non-alcohol and alcohol drinks to relax and enjoy the view. We were lucky to meet two of the beautiful women competing for Carnival 2022 queen, who were there for publicity photo shoots. Throughout the grounds cell phones could tune in verbal explanations so that we can take some of the history home with us.
The magnificence of the grounds and artifacts reinforces the claim that Mazatlan is the “Pearl of the Pacific” and a “don’t miss experience.”

Perfect place to learn, have fun and observe an amazing view. The whole tour takes about an hour and a half however afterwards you can explore freely, plus there is a bar restaurant. Everything is in excellent conditions for 500 pesos it is personally worth it

We originally opted to hike up to the lighthouse but after seeing the really long hike length we opted to accept a tour of the observe. Alessandra was our guide and was amazing. At $29 per person we learned a lot of history , toured an old home and also visited a bird sanctuary. It really was so comfortably paced, we were encouraged to ask questions and were engaged the whole time. It was nice to not feel rushed. Highly recommend. Our tour guide could be a professional photographer , she took the best photos of our group. So many memories <3

The view from the observatory and the hill it's on is beautiful. We enjoyed our time in the outdoor lounge area and even inside with the windows open getting the ocean breeze as we look out to the scenery as we enjoyed our drinks and afternoon snacks.
The history and artifacts have interesting stories of the place, and we had our wonderful tour guide Erica to tell them and answer any of our questions. And in the landscape there's the wonderful aviary full of friendly birds and part of was an area were deer kept a low profile.

This place is amazing! The views are wonderful. My kids really enjoyed the ride up the funicular and the parrots were a huge hit! My young daughters adored feeding the birds and having them land on our heads Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. He was happy to answer all of our questions and seemed to have a passion for history in the area. The short video gave me a lot more background in Mazatlán and it’s interesting history. Once at the top, you can sit and enjoy views that are out of this world! What a perfect place to enjoy a drink. This is a hidden gem and we loved our stop. I would recommend a visit to anyone from young families, to older couples, and anyone in between!

Beautiful place. Clean, well maintained exceptionally helpful staff who assisted us with using the elevator instead of the stairs to get to the second floor as we both have mobility issues. The video about the history of Mazatlan was fascinating.I can read and understand some Spanish but I appreciated the English subtitles. The view from the funicular railway was exquisite as were the grounds on the third level. Interesting birds and iguanas the Observatio itself fascinating. How did the curators manage to retrieve all the pictures furniture the rifles from the Mexican revolution
That would be a story in itself. Unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of time because I could have stayed all day. I’m planning to come back here next visit.

The staff was very informative and friendly. I’m so glad I went . The drive from Torres through the city to get to the observatory was scenic . The historic video of Mazatlan was so interesting. The aviary is so cool and I loved all the animals you have rescued. The sight of your city from the roof top is spectacular.
