Enjoyable but short visit at this mini zoo. They have about a thousand iguanas that can roam around the property but they mostly stay in the trees. There was a small enclosure with the baby iguanas, most of which are rescues. We also saw some coatis, peccaries, and some raccoons. They don’t charge to enter but do ask for a donation to help maintain these beautiful animals.

Interesting to get to know these animals up close. However, it feels like an improvised and precarious place. There are other animals in conditions of limited space. It is supported by donations. There is not much organization or clear information about iguanas.

you can see the iguanas from the sidewalk. Once inside it's a little depressing. Couple racoons sharing a very small cage and several other animals tied up.

It's great to see the iguanas climbing onto the roof of the iguanario's tin shelter and clambering through the gutter below , but once you go through the gate it's quite depressing. About 15 pigeons and doves share a crowded cage with no room to stretch, while an exotic-looking bird cowers nervously and silent in the corner of his - both of these cages placed on the ground, which is additionally distressing for birds. A pig trussed up so tight he couldn't lie down if he wanted squeals against the far wall, while over by the bird cages a possum of some sort is leashed to a tree. Three raccoons in a small pen look like they could climb out if they wanted, but they're wearing collars, which is a bit strange.
I would've cut the pig's ropes if I had any idea what to do with him. Most of my group wandered out and sat by the tour bus waiting for our guide to come out because we wished we'd never gone in.

Boy, this is a tough one. The overflowing army of iguanas, who apparently live in the trees because they are fed, was a site to behold - in fact it was one of my granddaughters trip highlights. They seem prehistoric and and actually fascinating to watch as they lumber into the pile of lettuce and vegetable scraps tossed out for lunch.
The other poor animals in this compound deserve nothing but pity. The manic raccoons in a mud hole of an enclosure, frantically "washing their hands". The dozens of parrots and song bird crammed into a wire cage. The "wild boars" crammed into another mud pit. The emaciated snake draped over the back of a chair -- a photo op!? Could go on, but you get the picture.
If they freed the tortured animals, I think this could be a fascinating experience. But as it is I can't recommend supporting them.

The Iguanario is in the heart of the old city of Manzanillo. You can walk 8 blocks south of the Zocalo on 21 de Marzo street. The canal will be on your left side and walk to the 3rd bridge then make a left to the entrance. The locals are very friendly and they will point you in the right direction. This sanctuary is run by one man who is raising iguanas, turtles and racoons. The animals are released into the wild once they mature. There is no entrance fee but there are steel milk containers that are donation boxes. The iguanas are not caged, hundreds of them roam around the property.

If you're in Manzanillo and have an hour or two this is easy and a lot of fun. It is funky as many things in Mexico are but you'll never see more iguanas. We had a car to get there but asking a taxi to take you there would be easy, it is close to the old town section. There is no entrance fee butt here is a donation box. We left a 100 pesos. Donations are used to buy food and supplies. Staff is friendly and helpful, speak some English. There are also some raccoons, coati, cavalenas and a few birds.
The size and colour of the older male iguanas is amazing. Was lots of fun and an easy side trip, we'd recommend it.

A great experience. I approached the entrance with trepidation, having seen dozens of iguanas in the trees from the street. The iguanas of all sizes are not enclosed but roaming freely, everywhere. They were well behaved and stayed behind the single rope that separates the public viewing area from the eating area of the iguanas. The owners’ son carried an iguana over, explaining a bit about it and even showing us its teeth.

A fellow started out with a couple of iguanas for rehabilitation and now has over 300! They are usually seen up in the trees until it's feeding time and then they come down in a hurry. They are huge and colorful and make great photo ops! He also has some birds in cages, raccoons and other animals.

I'm using an electric folding wheelchair. Is the road to the iguanario accessible or would you need a taxi, and is the Iguanario abstinence to a wheelchair? Thank you

Can you walk to this site from the cruise ship debarkation or do you need to take a taxi?
Written 25 October 2016
You can walk, it is about one kilometer or 1/2 mile. The walk will take you through the main downtown shopping. If you take a taxi, don't get in unless the taxi driver agrees to a fare of 30 pesos or less. The santuary is at most a 30 minute visit, and donations are not mandatory, but the funds help feed the hundreds if animals.
If I can make a suggestion, take in the iguanas. Offer a taxi driver $150 pesos to take you there and wait. Then drive you to las Brisas. In las Brisas there is a restaurant on the beach called Rock Food. You can have drinks and appies on the beach. You will be able to see your cruise ship on the other side of the bay. It is a beutiful beach. The drive back is only 15-20 minutes and the fare should only be 70 pesos at most( $4.00 usd).
The taxi drivers will try to get more if they know you are on the cruise ship. If you want a waiter will negotiate a fair fare🤓.
Bring towels from the ship. The water is safe at that part of the bay.
Enjoy!!

Can someone give us an actual address or latitude and longitude for this site?
thanks!
Written 28 January 2016
The actual address is 521 Calle 21 de Marzo. However, Calle 21 de Marzo appears to become a back alley in this particular block, not accessible by car, but on foot it is okay. It would be better to go one block west to Fracisco I. Madero and turn south and look for the Club de Leones. The Iguanario is just south of the Club and can be accessed through a small unpaved parking area. Hope this helps.

LUCASVIC:
