There are 3 sets of falls that we often visit and they are within ("relative") close proximity. Each has its own set of treats and challenges. With a proper guide/driver you can visit all 3 in a single day if you get an early start.
For our trips to the mountains, we generally hire two local fellows with Suburbans who are very knowledgeable of the mountain areas and they both speak excellent English.

This place was like a dream. I've never been in a jungle with a large waterfall where you could not only swim in the prestine cold water that was so clear you could see the bottom, but you could jump off the waterfall as well! We were brought here from Huatulco during our honeymoon and were lucky to have our guide to ourselves as well as a local, Erik, who was so sweet in helping us with our things and helping our clumsy selves wade through the water and showed us some aspects only the locals would know about (as well as applying a mud mask - which I ended up buying because I loved it!) We thoroughly enjoyed the hike and the beautiful surroundings. This is the real deal - you see and feel nature as it should be all around you.
We also got the meal that they offer after the trek (I would HIGHLY recommend it) and the authentic mexican food (cucumber salad, rice, tortillas, jalapeno mole with chicken, pork marinated in tamarind, and black beans) along with their hibiscus tea (Agua de Jamaica) and Oaxacan coffee. I purchased the dried flowers and coffee beans because I don't know the next time I'll be back.
Also, we went to the butterfly center where they had native butterflies (HUNDREDS of them) and a nursery where they were growing and hatching butterflies to help conservation. There was small fee to get in.
Helpful tips: It'd be great if you spoke Spanish as they can speak English, but they are able to tell you more about the place if you speak the language. Make sure to bring extra cash to tip your guides, grab some food, check out other things around the area, and get coffee, tea, and other souvenirs! Out of everything we did on our trip, this was my favorite activity.

We visited the falls, along with the coffee plantation, through a tour set up by Paraiso Huatulco. It was 1 1/2 hours to get there and the trip was all day, but the tour was 1200 pesos for 2 people, with lunch, snacks, mezcal and tour guide. The taxi ride alone would have been 900 pesos each way from the hotel. Talk about a great deal!
We also enjoyed being the only Americans/primary English speakers on the trip. The other couples in the group were Mexican as was the guide. He had excellent English to provide a fun commentary during the trip and was an incredibly safe driver.
For those who do not recommend visiting this location, I would wonder if they visited Huatulco with no interest in learning more about Mexico, the villages, the Huatulco way of life, etc. We learned a lot from our tour guide about what people eat, how they grow and harvest coffee, various information about villages we drove through - we learned a lot! The lunch was plentiful and the falls were beautiful. It was also fun to get away from the beach and into the mountains, where the air was cooler and you could get insight on how Oaxaca residents live.
I would recommend a tour here for anyone who enjoys light hiking, getting to know the city/country to which you're traveling, and learning more from the other Mexican residents on vacation.

I visited the falls/coffee plantation/butterfly sanctuary on Feb 6, 2014. It was the highlight of our trip!
8 of us packed in a van and made the 1.5 hour trek through the mountains. The views were fantastic, but the roads were a bit scary. It was worth it!
I cannot properly describe how beautiful the river and waterfalls are. There's a 500m trail along the river to get to the main falls. The butterflies combined with the sounds of the river and the birds, and the jungle canopy made for a dream-like hike. Seriously, I never thought I would see anything like that in my life!
We did the rope swings from the falls and walked down a couple more levels (there are several falls). The water is quite cool and there are a lot of tadpoles in the shallow areas.
After the falls, we ate a delicious traditional lunch at the coffee plantation. I highly recommend it!
On the ride back, we saw many small mountain villages. The locals had nice clothes hanging on their clotheslines and decent vehicles and motorcycles. I get the idea that the standard of living is higher than in other areas I've traveled in Mexico.

We would never have found this on our own, you will want a tour guide for this sort of thing. The falls are really spectacular! It starts as small rapids, and every step takes you closer to the main event! These falls seemed to be well over 120 m! Go for the cave experience! Our guide Enrique Pinacho took us over the rocks to the steps leading up to the cave which is visible from a lookout. It seemed easy enough until we had to stand under the spray, on the rocks, on our way to the steps! The water is on the cooler side temperature wise, just so you know! The steps lead to a cave, the cave is very short, only about 3 m and then you are in a pool under the falls! Beautiful!
Our guide, Enrique knows the area well, speaks very good English and provided everything we needed! See "Huatulco tours Enrique", he delivered exactly what he said he would and for the same price he quoted at the outset!

The Las Brisas waterfalls are like an oasis and we certainly enjoyed the experience. Our family of 4 (19 to 55 yrs) went April 13th. What made our experience great though was Edgar Escobar, our guide, who I booked prior to leaving for Huatulco. I found his name through another review and contacted him on his Facebook Page at Huatulco's Edgar Escobar. Cell is 958-118-2465. His first language is English so communicating with him was exceptional and he is very accommodating. Yes it is a lengthy drive but the whole time he taught us many things about the area and the horticulture and folklore and his fascinating life. We felt perfectly safe with him and would never have ventured into the cave without his guidance. He knows exactly where to step and what to hang onto in order to be safe. He let us set our own pace with no time limits on anything. We spent a fair amount of time at the rope swing and had we gone with a larger tour we would have missed out on that enjoyment.
Edgar also organized a boat for us to do the bay tour (April 17th) which was fabulous as we ended up seeing hundreds of dolphins in a rare show of spectacular jumping, two whales and a number of turtles. He actually let us use his pesos rather than our U.S. money in order to save us the exchange at the restaurant we stopped at on the beach during the bay tour. And because it was my husband's birthday he and the boat driver arranged to have some Mexican singers surprise my husband at the beach. At this stop we were very glad to have him along again to explain some numerous things to us. So if you wish to ensure that you have safe and enjoyable excursions get in touch with Edgar!

This trip is for adventurous and health people onnly because it is 3 hours ride with half on
mountainous road with lots of potholes. The waterfall and its surroundings are beautiful. Be warned: if you are sick or having a medical problem, you are out of luck because this is a rural village with no medical help.

We met with a man named Ivan who took us where ever we visited,His phone number is 9581086193. He charged us $100 for us and anyone who came with us. Left at 8am and stopped for beer and water for the trip. Stopped for free food at a roadside vendor. Seems Ivan knows a lot of local people. Then wished to stop at the Shaman stop(where we donated for local schools cause we stopped last trip) Then we continued on at a reasonable speed cause going too fast over bumpy roads fast require gravol. The trip was worth it. Beautiful. Amazing. We were fed at the site by the lovely local people at the site. please tip!

Had a rental car that we took up here. It's a good 1h+ ride up into the mountains to the waterfall, through a lot of small villages. Several persons wrote reg. 4x4-wheelers and SUVs etc. We had a small regular car and had no problems.
The falls are beautiful. 50pesos per person to enter. The water is clear and a bit fresh, but absolutely stunning! Definitely worth the trip up here!

We booked this through Air Transat once we arrived in Huatulco - Carlos did a fantastic job from start to finish- the ride was very rocky but he stopped numerous times to show us key areas and explain the Mexican way of living and about the local towns. He went beyond his expectations and stopped at scenic points to take pictures with the various couples (8 of us altogether). He also gave us a quick coffee plantation tour which was definitely not part of the itinerary and we loved it! The Oaxaca lunch is not to be missed! It was delicious with the mole sauce! The waterfall was breathtaking and my husband did his first jump into a waterfall as it wasnt too steep and he loved it! Although the water was cold as it was freshwater, it was so clean and not many tourists!
