The Mask Museum (Casa de Mascaras) is apparently newly opened within the past year in a new building tucked between El Fuerte de San Diego and the Acapulco Naval History Museum. We easily combined the Mask Museum, Naval History Museum and the Acapulco History Museum In El Fuerte de San Diego in a single excursion. The air-conditioned mask museum is excellent and I highly recommend a visit. There are a wide variety of types of colorful current and historical masks from all regions of Mexico tastefully displayed. When we visited, no signs had yet been posted in either Spanish or English to describe the exhibited masks. However, our tour guide, Roberto, from Roberto Alarcon Tours, was able to explain the history and geographical and cultural significance of all the masks based on his extensive knowledge of masks from the previous Casa de Mascaras (Mask Museum) and general Acapulco history and culture. Roberto made our experience much more educational and meaningful than it otherwise would have been.

The first time I went to Acapulco this was a very interesting mask museum, especially since I have several masks from all over Mexico. It turned into an art gallery a few years later and then into a kind of communal space, and then it closed. The Jaguar Restaurant bought most of their masks (or perhaps the businesses were somehow related) and I recently saw some of their old masks there.
