Tried to drive up from the coast, but road was impassable for cars so went down to Cabo and took the hard to find dirt road up into the mountains. A number of forks in dirt road with no signs, but people helpful when asked for the way. It's basically a long bumpy drive of about 26 km up a mtn dirt road past cows and goats - you get there, there's a small village, not much to see really. Amazing that people have lived there for so long, just a few families. No sign of witchcraft, missed the gate with the skull sadly. Drove back down the mountain. Enjoyed the trip. Not for everyone. Loved the way they are not capitalizing on their fame with tourist souvenirs at all. The cop in Cabo who gave us directions thought we were crazy to even drive up.

We visited La Candelaria on our recent vacation trip to Cabo San Lucus, The night before my wife and daughters went and purchased various items, coffee beans, Sugar, Rice, Baby Formula, and Diapers. We went as a family as we heard they were off grid, no power, no electricity. after driving for miles in and over the mountains we came to La Candelaria. I was shocked to see that had one paved block with side walks, with a church and a school in the middle. We turned left at the end of the paved road and lucky we had a 4-wheel drive, we came upon an elderly lady who spoke no English and we spoke No Spanish. We were able figure out her name was Un-Sally and her dog was named Kenny. We gave her a care package and went back to meet another family at the end of the road across from the playground. This lady was kind enough to show us her home, She gave us sugar cane and some home made candy. My son played basketball with some of the kids on the court next to their home. Grandma was cooking stew on stove outside, They had a little frog radio playing, I wanted to bad to just send them the one we have just sitting in our garage. We stayed and visited for about 30 minutes, we then gave her 2 of our care packages and were on our way back over and through the mountains only making one wrong turn on our way back. Coming out seems much more faster then going in. It was such a fun adventure and seeing how the live with so little was quite an eye opener for me and my family. I would love to share the photo with this family, If someone knows how I could mail this to them please let me know.

This was the highlight of our honeymoon, not the romantic stuff but getting away and seeing how these people lived. Seeing the school projects and the things in this town were very interesting to us. Anyways we would recommend seeing this with the WILD ATV tour that stops in here. Very interesting!

3 of us booked a car/driver from Todos Santos Private Transportation, owned by friendly Mario Becerril. We were met at Todos's City Park by Chevo our driver. We were pleased to board a roomy, clean and beefy Honda 4-WD vehicle. Though Chevo speaks little English and I speak little Spanish, we enjoyed each other for our 5-6 hour tour. Chevo expertly maneuvered through the deep sand of the arroyo and narrow, bumpy road mountain road up to La Candelaria, stopping along the way for photo ops of the oasis, birds and gnarly trees. He took us to Lorena Hankins's village home and studio. Lorena was very gracious in telling how she happened to arrive at Candelaria and then gave a demo on putting the finishing touches on a lidded pot. After purchasing several of her pieces, Chevo took us to a sugar cane processing establishment and then up to the colorful village cemetery. Chevo asked if there was anything we wanted to see on our "little field trip". When asked if he knew of something else, he suggested going off road to a lovely waterfall. Here we enjoyed our pre-packed picnic lunch and a cold beer. After a final stop at the blanket factory, we hugged our new friend, Chevo, good bye and thanked him for being a part of one of our best days in the Todos area.

First of all you will not find it with maps or electronics. It takes instructions from a live person and real 4 wheel drive to get there. Ask how to find Lorena "the pottery maker"if you find this place. The big surprise is she was long ago from Portland Oregon. The local brouha is a gringo!

Well, interesting as it is, Candelaria is very hard to find. We had Moon travel book and couldn't follow the directions from a certain point. The roads are very sandy, it is quite remote, and no one speaks English. If you are on an ATV tour, maybe the guide knows about it. We tried a second time with a native who had been there before. With the road improvements, even he had a hard time. Once we found the town, we spoke with the husband of the woman (an American) who teaches native women to do pottery, so they will have a means to support themselves if need be (which is often the case). I had bought some pottery in Todos Santos, and in Candelaria had the opportunity to buy some from the Master! I was thrilled. There really is not much of a town. All I can add is make sure you follow the directions off Rt. 19 if you don't go,the ATV route.
