A visit that is very worthwhile, much less touristy than the rest. It is not illuminated (you go with a flashlight) and the tours are in English, but it is undoubtedly a very different experience. We did it on foot (1.30h) but they also have navigable boat tours.

What a great experience! We joined a small group of people for this guided tour of the caves. The guide was competent and passionate, a real gem! We got to see some endemic species. A big difference from the crowded Postojna and the impersonal audio guide. Highly recommended!

I visited more than one cave in Slovenia, but the tours in Planina remained in my heart. There is so much love and respect, and above all preparation by the guides, which make it a unique experience. The way it's run, definitely my favorite cave. Thank you!

Ok, so i visited this cave with my two kiddos (6&8). We were a small international group of visitors, some Slovenes, Germans and Italians, ages from 6 to 60. The guide was a really wonderful, animated lady who really knows her stuff. She was full of knowledge, interesting anecdotes, warm and professional. Brilliant English, fluent in German. She was able to answer every single question we had. She was very personable, i really can’t say enough nice things about her. She answered all our questions, gave us interesting historical background as well as many interesting facts about the flora and fauna.
The cave itself is great. We took the smaller tour which took us about 800 meters into the cave (at one point we were 150m underground), which took about 2.5 hours. There is also a longer tour that takes you deep in the cave by boats, but this one is perfect for a quick trip and since the paths are secured, it was also suitable for children.
Planina cave is the largest water cave in Slovenia i really wanted to see the confluence of two river underground (but got much more thrown into the bargain). Rak comes from Rakov skocjan and Pivka comes from the Postojna cave (both well worth visiting as well). We saw various cave animals, from bats to the holy grail of cave animals itself: proteus or human fish. Seeing it in its natural habitat brings a certain level of excitement that the ones in an aquariums just don’t have.
In sharp contrast with the loud and touristy Postojna cave, this one gives you a more intimate and authentic view of what life in a cave looks like, how long it takes for the natural wonders to come into existence and how you really can find beauty, vibrant life and magic in seemingly the unlikeliest places of all.
This is a really nice short trip, perfect for tourists passing through as well as for families looking for an interesting and fun trip to the underground to cool off.
Just a small piece of advice: in the cave is a chill temp of around 10degrees C and also wet, so sneakers or better and at least a cardigan will be welcome.

Bit of a cheat as we missed the last tour but the environs are probably the nicest in Slovenia. You approach down a steepish slope into the valley then along a raised path along the old millrace. The sound of the water, the dappled shade, the birds and butterflies are magical. The cave is not 'locked' but it would be inadvisable to go beyond the entrance without a guide. There is a kiosk at the car park advising dates and times of tours.
You can also visit the Rabkov Tower whilst parked here, and nearby Grad Haasberg (qv). The large building near the entrance was a water mill and is now a hydro-electric station.

This is not a tourist trap or spot for big groups. Cave is delicious place for nature admirers, for people, who can walk an hour and know that karstic (caves with water or without, with stalagmites and other forms) nature is something really special. Entrance is near village Planina, not far from round tower (Ravbarjev stolp). You need to ask for a guided visit in advance. Inner part of the cave is locked. Guides are kind and helpful. You will walk to the confluence of the two rivers; they will show you some little bugs. Guides speak Slovene, Italian and know basic English. In summer season it is open each day at 5 p.m. Look on web or call. Reserve at least two hours

We took a guided tour and walked/paddled to the end of the cave and back, which lasted about 6 hours. Armed with a paddle, helmet, rubber boots and a flashlight, we went into the darkness. It was a large groupof about 15 people, which is not common, smaller groups tend to be faster according to our guide. An amazing experience. Somewhat physically demanding (you need to climb moist slippery rocks etc), so make sure you wear something comfortable. A must see!

This cave is the perfect alternative if you want to avoid the crowded Postojna caves. We were only just two with the guide! Very interesting and also a very big cave, impressing. You get provided by the guide with a torch light because the cave is completely dark otherwise. If you have luck, you will see the proteus or « human fish ».

We are experienced cavers so we went on the 4 hour trip in inflatable boats, we had to paddle about 3 kilometres and carry the heavy boats over roof falls or sections where the water was too shallow. We then climbed a ladder into the well decorated roof passages with several short slippery climbs to negotiate, it was well worth the visit and the effort involved.

Deadly dangerous Traumatic experience where me and my family almost drowned.
There was one guide for the seven of us, he never mentioned that in the back of the boat there was a dangerous water flow, just asked us if we can paddle. It started taking us further back, and flipped the boat, where we all struggled to get out, drowning. I dont know where the water takes you, and I am petrified to think about it, but the current is so strong that we hardly got out. There were no life jackets, with a poor boat condition, I also believe we were too heavy for that small boat. All this, and while fighting for my life the ‘guide’ continued to yell at us and swearing at us, like some kind of a psychopath. And then worried about his equipment where we almost drowned. I am bruised all over my body, not to even mention the trauma I experienced. I cannot believe these kind of people exist, where they would endanger people lives like this. I will decide on the next steps about this, as I am currently still in shock.

È possibile avere qualche info in più? Sto cercando di capire se è una attività adatta a noi che abbiamo una bimba di 18 mesi. Quanto c'è da camminare? È raggiungibile in auto? E con il passeggino? Il sentiero è ben tracciato di quindi possiamo farlo da soli o è necessaria una guida? Cosa devo aspettarmi? Grazie mille

The car park is about 150 metres from cave entrance but is a good path so stroller OK, but would not take it into the cave. The cave is 'open' but it would not be safe to go without a guide - there is a kiosk at car park telling times and dates of tours. It is worth seeing even if you do not go into the cave proper.

I can't tell from the website if it's possible to do the boat tour of the cave right now (May 2017). Is it possible to do that on a Monday during the day? Thanks for any info.
Written 18 May 2017
I recommend you send an email given on the website or fill in the contact form. There has to be just enough water for the boat tour. I don't know about Mondays.
