Dear golfers,

Unfortunately, the welcome to Cameron Highlands golf was a reflection of the local climate: cold and uninviting. This disappointing first Impression contrasts with the quality of the course, which remains pleasant and well maintained. However, it is important to note that human warmth is sorely lacking in this otherwise beautiful setting.

In short, prepare to enjoy a beautiful course, but do not expect a warm welcome. An informed golfer is worth two, as they say.

Good game, everyone.

My husband and I are golf players and play regularly in the UK. Specially my husband, who plays since he was a kid and does golf travels to other countries.
We came to the Cameron Highlands golf course to check the course prices and rules and planned to come to play today. We were looking forward to playing in Malaysia!
Our first experience was really bad for the way we felt treated. They were very rude - even aggressive - when telling us we were not wearing the right clothes and wanted to hire golf clubs, in spite of wearing collared shirts we were not admitted. It was really clear they wanted us to buy their shirts.
We are not complaining about the rules but about the way we were treated. That is simply unacceptable.

An overall pleasant experience especially with the cool morning start. The course was muddy in parts due to the rainy season, which resulted in several plugged balls. However, the course was scenic and the small greens were in good condition. Worth the 18 hole walk and enjoyed myself.

My group of 4 (from Kedah) played on 6 August. The course was challenging and exciting with numerous hills and slopes and river/ pond crossings. but for the 2nd 9, half the greens were temporary greens which are extremely small and I wouldn't dare call them a green even though temporary. Its like putting on the fairway. 2 of my group members played more than 2 months ago and it was the same. Read other reviews and others too decry over the same and other issues for a long time! Otherwise the course was well kept and dry despite the altitude and the rains.
On registration we were shocked the rates did not match the website. The counter girls say the Club has recently been taken private from the Majlis (town council) but why hasnt the Club revised or changed the website? we went to play because of senior citizen rate but alas there was none. The Club does not take credit cards - thats a surprise for a business venture.
The Club also does not recognise our insurance cards and made it mandatory for us to buy their insurance plan albeit it was RM3/ pax.
With the state of affairs at the greens on the 2nd 9, I expected a RM10 discount in goodwill by the Club but none. One could play more strokes on the green than on the fairway, so greens are important in golf and surely the new management knows this.
Be aware you may find tourists walking carefree on the course. With the risk of being hit by a mishit shot. This is evident for fairways close to the fence by the road especially holes 13 and 14 but I have seen them wandering all over thinking its a public park.
Go to the toilets and there is no toilet paper, no paper tissues after washing hands. Appalling. This is basic requirement for a developed place in the 21st century. We are not in a rural undeveloped place/ country.
My flight mate had a caddie who after 9 holes refused to continue because he was hungry - more like because we didnt buy him lunch! No other caddie though available was willing to take his place!
I personally expressed our frustrations to the counter girls but all they had was excuses blaming the Majlis/ town council and the change in management. Sad
Overall we enjoyed the game but with the situation as mentioned above, it wont be on our future golf plan. It was our first and probably last unless they reintroduce senior rate, improve the greens and toilet facilities..

All 18 holes of the course are open (Front Brinchang Nine and Back Tanah Rata Nine). In general the fairways and greens are in good condition. Sadly the Clubhouse has not been well maintained and it's starting to show with amenities such as no soap in the showers, along with tap handles missing in a number of showers. Green fees have escalated by 100% in past 4 years, with 50% increase since re-opening of 2nd nine holes. The standard of caddy varies greatly but if you get a good one stick with him. The score card incorrectly identifies course ratings with Red higher than Blue!! There is no beer available and the standard of food offered is poor. That said the temperature in Cameron Highlands makes for a very enjoyable game. Happy golfing.

If you're allergic to bee stings, don't play golf here. The Club management doesn't issue any precautions about possible attacks by swarms of bees even after several incidents of golfers being attacked, and if you get stung, don't expect them to be sincerely sympathetic!

Good cooling weather to golf. A lot of up down hill game. 1st tee to 10 tee fairway is green and beautiful, after 10 tee onward fairway very bad maintaining. Overall a playable and cheap golf course.

Pros

Cheap
Nice climate for golf

Cons

Back 9 greens not in great condition, holey sandy and dried out

Rough too long, unplayable

Holes badly sign posted

Only accept cash, no card payments

If you don't have cash for a caddy, or simply don't want one, they will glare at you and make you uncomfortable as you play

Staff speak very little English, so difficult to arrange a tee time let alone anything more complicated

Overall if you have limited time there are better things to do in Cameron Highlands, this is not a great golfing experience

Playing golf in cool and scenic surroundings is what golfers come to Cameron Highlands for but it has taken so long to get the course back into play due to numerous delays that one can only play 9 holes, the other 9 being 'maintained'.

Revamp of the course has taken a long time and still the second 9 only looks to be ready early 2015. The course layout is still challenging and many previous holes now completely reversed / turned around. Can't complain about the superb weather tho. Lots of nice memories so a little biased here. Especially the days when RM 40+ would get you an whole day of unlimited golfing. I am eagerly awaiting the opening of the second nine and will always be golfing here as long as I can make the 7 hour drive from Singapore.
