A handsome temple with a traditional Lao style stupa. Around the stupa there are endless gilded nagas (including some with birds nests growing out of their mouths) but the big surprise is that there is a door leading into a room under the tower itself decorated with a riot of gold leaf on the many statues of the Buddha. A really worthwhile visit - allow a good hour.

Located on Mekong riverbank in the heart of Nakhon Phanom city, the temple is a holy site for those who born on Saturday. The place contains a beautiful 24 metre tall Laotian style square-shaped white & gold pagoda that enshrines relics of Arhants (enlightened monks). Although much smaller in size, it shares the same design characteristics as the famous Wat Phra That Phanom. We walked 3 times in clockwise direction around the pagoda to pay respect.

Among the prettiest in Nakhon Phanom city proper, this riverside temple with great scenic views of Khammouane is best known for its Phra That Nakhon (พระธาตุนคร) of the same style as Phra That Phanom but not as tall. Beautifully illuminated at night, it’s a symbolic temple for people born on Saturday.
Just in case you’re curious, here’s the list of temples for each day of the week, all located in Nakhon Phanom province. To find their location, google the Thai name.
Sunday = Phra That Phanom (พระธาตุพนม), That Phanom district
Monday = Phra That Renu (พระธาตุเรณู), Renu Nakhon
Tuesday = Phra That Si Khun (พระธาตุศรีคุณ), Na Kae
Wednesday = Phra That Mahachai (พระธาตุมหาชัย), Pla Pak
Thursday = Phra That Prasit (พระธาตุประสิทธิ์), Na Wa
Friday = Phra That Tha Uthen (พระธาตุท่าอุเทน), Tha Uthen
We have visited them all. Sunday’s is without doubt the grandest and, for both Thais and Laos alike, holiest. Architecturally Wednesday’s is the most unique while naturally Friday’s has the best setting by the Mekong. For remoteness, Thursday’s wins.

The province of Nakhon Phanom is famous for its distinctive style of chedi (spire) which bears closer resemblance to those of Laos than nearby its native Thailand. The Nakhon Phanom school of chedi is characterized by a thin, elegant tower which is carved by reliefs, bamboo motifs, gold ornamentation and a narrow finial.
The best place to see one in town is at Wat Maha That, which is located right along the river. It is an object of intense veneration from Thai Buddhists. Entrance is free.

As you can find thousands of temples in Thailand, here in the Nakhon Phanom area you find big number of very well care taken temples. Typical for the Isaan area (Northeast) is the square shape.

Beautiful temple in the middle of town. Can’t miss it. I strolled from the far end of the river and passed by this temple. Go during the morning for the right light.

I never have a chance to visit Nakhon Phanom when I was young. Today I visit this temple which I know the history when it collapse in 1975.
I can see now how beautiful. I also visit the museum which present the old pagoda which is collapsed down and many things inside.

Worth a visit. Unlike any other famous temple, Wat Maha That is restful temple. You are encourage to do a mediate walk clockwise. Wear your socks. The temple doesn't allow to walk inside the pagoda with shoes. I was there in the day and my feet burnt real bad.

I was fortunate enough to have a personal guide who told me about the history of this beautiful Temple. Reality is this is just not another Temple.
Inside is a bone of the original Buddha. That's historic.
I also learnt about some wreckage of this temple a few years ago and its rebuilding.
Of course you have to remove your shoes to go around, but it's well worth it. I did the customary 3 laps in bare feet on a stinking hot day, however they do have mats on the ground to prevent your feet from burning.
If you are in this part of Thailand you really must go to Wat Maha That Temple.
Rated 20 out of 10.
