Enjoyed a walk through the caves and past the waterfalls, both of which are worth visiting, the countryside is lovely. Avoid the restaurant, they were rude and unhelpful, leaving us sitting at a table for ages with our toddler before saying they were 'full', leaving us with no lunch. Better places to eat in the village.

Beautiful little French village to start a really interesting walk through an old forest at the base of the cliffs. When we went in January and the river had frozen and we got the chance to walk over the falls on the river bed. It was an awesome experience especially as we didn't see one person whilst there!! :)

This place has it all - we stayed 3 nights in the hotel de l'Abbeye and could have stayed longer. the town at the foot of the valley is one of Les Plus Belles Villages de France, and sports an old abbey, stone houses along the stream, a waterfall with a good restaurant at its foot, and a cave half... One of the prettiest villages in the area we were told and they were right. As people have mentioned before, the Abbey is a must to amble around in. The water falls are a must and look enchanting. Unfortunately, there were a few families with small children running around screaming that spoiled the ambience somewhat. But hey, its a tourest... More

A stunning valley cut from the limestone, the Reculee de Baume les Messieurs would be worth a visit even if there weren't other places to visit there, such as the Abbey. Between Besacon and Poligny, this is worth the detour (which is along a lovely stretch of winding road).

See my other review of the grottes for a take on accessibility here - approx 20 mins from Besançon and worth the drive - but caution on the roadway approaches, and if the weather is at all rainy or snow or fog, then it's likely not to be very impressive - this valley needs full and glorious sunlight to be... We visited in the dead of winter. Not many people visit Baume-les-Messieurs. So you basically have the whole place to yourself to take photos, etc. We arrived early, when the cliffs were shrouded in mist - making the hamlet looks mysterious. Driving from hamlet to hamlet is a nice way to pass the day, but only if you have time.

This hamlet must have one of Europe's most spectacular settings and quite unexpected as you approach from most directions. The abbey is well worth a couple of hours - entry is free and there is a very good audio guide available in different languages for only 4 Euros. Also a must is to drive up to the head of the... I cannot find a place to write a review of the attraction of Chateau Chalon which is close by this site. The whole area is lovely with dramatic ascents and descents and spectacular views. The Jura has deep valleys and above them gently rolling pastures sometimes 600 feet above the valleys. Baume de Messieurs is very attractive but our Logis... More
