And there were great artists back then

I'm amazed at the intricate designs and the choice of colours. I wonder what they used back then to make art come to life.

I do not understand why neither the Rajasthan government nor the haveli owners are paying attention to these fresco - painted havelis. The frescoes are lifelike & still well - preserved. A few of the havelis are still nice but most of them are crumbling. It is a good idea to take a guided tour of the havelis. What saddened... More

Churu has some of the most amazing painted hovels and free does in the Shekawati region. take time to explore them so that you are not killed by a sensory overload.

Found the havelies fascinating. From the outside just ordinary buildings, maybe in some cases some frescos but once inside they open out to present a picture of life many years ago. A hidden courtyard or two unseen from the road often with beautiful frescos one has to see.

- some havelis are well maintained - many left to decay despite belonging to extremely rich families

The paintings on these Havelis, depict everything from mythology to kings to British period, Most of them are in Blue and vegetable dye was the most commonly used colour format. Depicting various element stuff like elephants, palakis, gods, godesses and more they were a part of everyday life during that period.

We have had the unusual possibility of staying overnight in one such Haveli. It was incredibly beautiful - hand-carved and painted. Its original character and style was greatly preserved, however, as nobody has lived there for many years, there were also bats and pigeons staying there with us - it was an unforgettable experience. We had also been on a... More

Loved the atmosphere and the whole area with its abandoned melancholy feel of the place which is steeped in history.
